This Is The Reason Why Apple Watch Sport Screen Looks Better Outdoors Than Apple Watch Sapphire

Despite being less resistant, the glass-X Ion Watch Sport offers better outdoor performance. One of the main differences we found between and Apple Watch Sport Stainless steel is its screen. While the former is made of toughened glass Ion-X, the other is a sapphire panel. The advantages of the sapphire glass front are obvious, greater hardness and virtually impossible to scratch, but what about the benefits of Ion-X versus Sapphire?

A few months ago we brought you a first analysis from DisplayMate boys in all screens comparing the current Smartwatch. The analysis was as clear winner at Apple Watch, yet experts found that the Ion-X offered a superior outdoor performance than sapphire upper two collections. Now, a more detailed study shows us a deeper insight into this:

In the darkness, Apple Watch both screens look and perform identically, but ambient light look and perform differently because of the difference in reflectance of the sapphire screen. Apple Sport Watch in glass Ion-X saw the reflectance level was 4.7%, while the Apple Watch sapphire was 8.2%, which is 74% higher than the glass. That 74% higher reflectance of Apple Watch sapphire implies that the display reflects almost twice the ambient light in the Apple Watch Sport.

The study tested both screens in different lighting conditions to test the contrast, color saturation or vividness of the colors. The display sapphire background is much brighter because the reflectance 74% more compared to the glass. This causes the differences between the two screens outdoors are very obvious and striking.

The report notes that Apple could improve their screens sapphire watch on the future generations to improve the visibility outdoors. As explained from MacRumors, this would be possible by the use of new advanced technologies that reduce the level of reflection not only on the sapphire but also in the conventional glass. Strong rumors indicate that last year Apple has been investigating the treatment of sapphire crystal, a material that could debut in next generations of iPhone and, presumably, by which time reflectance levels are on par with current with conventional glass.
