The Advanced Features of the Latest S-Pen on The Galaxy Note 5

On August 13, 2015, we saw the latest Galaxy Note 5 was introduced. That distinguish the Note series with another phablet is the availability of stylus / pen specially called S-Pen.

In contrast to other, more targeted stylus instead of fingers, blunt or require batteries, S-pen from Samsung really functions like a pen. Pointy toes and has a pressure sensor, such as a pen in general for writing and drawing.

Strangely enough, usually pens specifically for tablets, smartphones, which has a pressure sensor and advanced settings, require a battery as an energy source to interact with the application. While the S-pen Samsung does not.

Where the resources of the ‘stylus’ Samsung Galaxy Note come from? Why could work like a pen, highlighter or pencil, even calligraphy pen, the ability to create a fine line when it is not pressed, or more real and thick lines when pressed? Let’s try to find out.

To be able to produce writing or sketching on the Samsung Note screen smartphone, there are 2 main parts that take the role.

The first in the bottom of the Galaxy Note screen, there is a layer of special metal grid, called digitizer, which generate electromagnetic to interact with S-pen. The second part is the S-pen itself.

This metal layer, digitizer will recognize the S-pen when brought near the screen, and gives a series of commands on the Note smartphone to do something. Such as writing or drawing. Electromagnetic induction from a special metal coating is also provide ‘energy’ which is then stored by the S-pen.

Because the electromagnetic induction then we know the other commands of the S-pen that not only writing and drawing, but also hover, where the S-pen does not have to touch the screen to interact, but enough to be on it a few millimeters above.

Hover is useful to display the contents of the SMS, look picture in a folder, water gesture, menus, and more, simply by hovering the stylus on the designated location without having to touch the screen.

A lot of people like the S-pen function, it is because of it has pointy toes like a pen, lighter, and smaller sized to be inserted in the smartphone. Another small-sized stylus, usually do not use batteries and a blunt end, known as capacitive stylus.

The stylus functions as more suitable to replace the finger and a little more precision than a finger, but still far enough to catch the precision of the S-pen.

On the Galaxy Note, we can activate to alert if the S-pen left behind and was not in place when we bring our Galaxy Note device. Even the Galaxy Note 5, we can see the info last date and time when the S-pen is removed from the container. This is useful when we forget, we still can estimate the time in which the S-pen is left behind. Very helpful feature!
