Apple Is Considering More Memory Chip Suppliers
According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple is looking for a third supplier of the NAND memory chips that it employs. Currently, Samsung is Apple’s largest contractor, followed by SK Hynix. Several experts said that the Cupertino-based company is looking for opportunities with the Chinese semiconductor company Yangtze Memory Technologies.
Although the agreement between the two has not yet been finalized, sources have revealed that the manufacturer has provided Apple with samples of its technology and has received approval from the smartphone company. If all requirements are met, the first NAND chip shipments will begin in May 2022.
Please keep in mind, however, that the Yangtze chip’s design is one generation behind that of Samsung and other memory chip manufacturers. It is unknown which chip will be used, but according to some leaks, Apple will use Yangtze NAND flash for its new handsets, such as iPhone SE.
