Threads Blocks Europeans

In October 2019, Instagram introduced Threads, a separate app for chatting with Close Friends on the platform. However, Meta, Instagram’s parent company, recently launched a new version of Threads to compete with Twitter.

While this revamped Threads app is now available in over 100 countries, including the US and UK, it is currently unavailable in Europe. Even attempting to use a VPN to access Threads in Europe won’t work, as Meta has confirmed that they are actively blocking users from European countries. This results in issues such as profiles and content not loading and notifications not working.

They stated that threads isn’t available in most Europeans countries. Europe is an important market for us, and we hope to expand Threads to more countries in the future.”

Within a week of its initial launch, the app gained an impressive 100 million users. Expanding its availability to European countries would only increase this number. However, due to potential regulatory factors such as the upcoming Digital Markets Act (DMA) in Europe, downloading the app in the region seems unlikely for now.

The DMA is a regulatory initiative by the European Union aimed at addressing concerns regarding the power and influence of large technology companies. As Meta faces scrutiny and potential regulations in Europe, it’s understandable that they may be cautious about expanding Threads to European countries.

While European users eagerly await the arrival of the app , it remains uncertain when or if the app will become accessible in the region. As the tech regulatory landscape evolves, it will be interesting to see how Meta adjusts its strategy and navigates the complexities of launching Threads in Europe.
