Paladin is a solid choice in Baldur’s Gate 3, offering a mix of support, weapon damage, and magic in a tough, well-armored package. If you’re thinking of multiclassing a Paladin, the smart move is to focus on the Divine Smite feature. Linking up with a full caster is key, and any class with high Charisma works, like the Sorcerer, Bard, or Warlock.
Out of the Charisma-based classes, the Sorcerer stands out for this build, often called a Sorcadin. Here’s the basic idea:
- Use the Sorcerer’s extra spell slots to power up Divine Smite.
- Rely on the Paladin’s toughness to cover for the Sorcerer’s weaknesses.
- Utilize the Sorcerer’s Twinned and Quickened Metamagics to be more effective in actions.
Twinned Spell lets the Sorcadin buff or debuff multiple targets at once, using their solid Constitution Saving Throws to keep Concentration. Quickened Spell allows them to debuff a target with a spell like Hold Person as a Bonus Action and then land a potent Divine Smite critical hit for big damage.
Starting as a Paladin at level 1 is key for Heavy Armor Proficiency. Forget about Dexterity and focus on Strength, Charisma, and Constitution. After level 1, you can continue as a full Paladin to level 6 or mix in Sorcerer levels along the way, thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3’s respec system.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Paladin Guide
Focus Paladin – Survivability in the Early Game
Keep it simple and start with 6 levels in Paladin. This gives you early-game survivability and important features like Divine Smite, Extra Attack, and Aura of Protection.
- Level 1-6: Paladin (Heavy Armor, Divine Smite, Extra Attack, Aura of Protection)
Multifocus Paladin – Attack and Survivability
Alternatively, take a few Sorcerer levels for early spell slots and then head to level 6. This enhances magical abilities with more spell slots, a Bloodline subclass, Metamagic, and spells like Shield.
- Level 1-2: Paladin (Heavy Armor, Divine Smite)
- Level 3-6: Sorcerer (Bloodline, Sorcery Points, Metamagic)
Level 7-12: The Sorcadin Journey
Option 1 Continued
If you started as a pure Paladin, transition to pure Sorcerer for the rest of the game.
- Level 7-12: Sorcerer (Bloodline, Sorcery Points, Metamagic, Feat)
Option 2 Continued
If you took Sorcerer from 3-6, take two more Sorcerer levels and then focus on maxing out Paladin levels.
- Level 11-12: Sorcerer (Subclass Feature)
- Level 3-6: Paladin (Divine Health, Feat, Extra Attack, Aura of Protection.
