A big shock hit the Baldur’s Gate 3 community when a player pulled off something pretty unbelievable: they took down Withers, a major character in the game.

Withers, this powerful skeleton dude, does important things like letting players redo their characters, hire help, and bring back dead friends. In Patch 5, he also throws the final party so you can say goodbye to your in-game buddies.

Now, what’s wild about Withers is that everyone thought he was untouchable, according to the game’s story. But, against all the odds, a player found a way to kick him out of the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Warning: Spoilers about Withers’ true identity coming up.

So, the player stumbled onto this trick by using the Illithid Power “Ability Drain” to lower Withers’ smarts. If any stat drops to zero, you get the Atrophied condition, which means instant game over.

After a nap, Withers turned into loot, and the player said, “Looks like he’s not coming back.” For those not in the know, Withers is actually Jergal, the Lord of the End of Everything and the ex-God of Death. That’s some serious power, beating out even super strong Clerics in magic.

The fact that a player took out such a big deal character was a surprise, probably not what the game creators at Larian expected. They likely didn’t see players using Ability Drain to zap Withers out of the story.

Since Withers is a big deal in Baldur’s Gate 3, his death might mess up the game in a big way.

Luckily, the player didn’t go back to an old save and kept going to see what happens without Withers. We’re hoping they share updates on how the game goes without this super important character.
