Are you one of the users who enjoyed an ad-free experience after purchasing the retail version of Windows 11? Well, that era has come to an end. The latest update for Windows 11, known as KB5036980, was released this week, bringing ads for apps to the “recommended” section in the Start Menu, one of the most frequently used areas in the OS.

According to the release notes, the “recommended” section in the Start Menu will display some apps from the Microsoft Store. These apps are selected from a small group of developers curated by Microsoft.

While this feature of suggesting apps is enabled by default, users can revert to the original Windows settings after installing this update. You can do this by going to Settings, then selecting Personalization > Start, and turning off the option “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.”

This “feature” comes just weeks after the release of the Insider beta version, showing how quickly Microsoft can implement changes when desired. However, there hasn’t been enough time given to gather user feedback, unlike the goal of the Insider program.

This update may make some customers uncomfortable, especially considering the starting price of Windows 11 Home at $139. While removing ads isn’t a major challenge, it may remind people of the time they spent removing bloatware from OEM Windows installations. Previously, Microsoft experimented with ads in the Windows 11 File Explorer, but the experiment was halted shortly afterward.
