1. Getting Started
When you first spawn as a Slayer, you’ll find yourself in Tokyo with a wooden sword. Your first task is to choose your Breathing Style. You can access the breathing options by pressing M and navigating to the breathing section. Note that if you don’t select a breathing style, you’ll have to complete the Slayer exam with no abilities.
The Slayer Exam
To rank up beyond the starting rank (which we’ll refer to as Misoto), you must complete the Slayer exam. This exam takes place at Mount Fuji, which you can reach from Tokyo. The exam starts every 6 to 8 minutes. During the exam, your goal is to defeat 15 demons.
- Tip: Stick with a medium group during the exam to avoid being overwhelmed by stronger Slayers. To earn participation, hit each demon twice with your wooden sword.
After slaying 15 demons, you’ll want to run to the hills to avoid the Hand Demon, a boss that can be very difficult for lower ranks. Stay in a safe spot where you can easily outrun the demon until the exam ends.
Earning Your Sword
Once you complete the exam, you will spawn at the Swordsmith Village. Here, you will receive Slayer Ore, which you can exchange with the blacksmith for your first sword.
2. Points and Training
As you progress, it’s crucial to manage your skill points effectively. You’ll want to avoid putting points into your character initially, as reaching 9 points or more will lead to being stalked by demons during missions.
Instead, focus on Breathing Training. This training grants two essential passives: Total Concentration and Constant Breathing. These passives enhance your ability to breathe, recharge your skills, and improve your overall damage output.
Gourd Training
Every time you reach a new level (specifically at every 5 levels), make sure to engage in Gourd Training. This training increases your Breathing Potential and helps you unlock powerful abilities.
3. Combat Strategies
There are two main strategies for defeating demons: Limb Damage and Burst Damage.
Limb Damage
- Limb Damage focuses on cutting off a demon’s limbs, reducing their blood level to zero. This is vital, as blood allows demons to regenerate health.
- Strategy: Use abilities that target limbs to gradually weaken the demon. Once their blood is at zero, you can execute them.
Burst Damage
- Burst Damage is all about quickly draining a demon’s health points (HP).
- Strategy: This method is effective but requires good mobility and skill to stick to your target. If you’re a beginner, consider starting with Limb Damage to build your confidence.
Combining Both Strategies
Ideally, you should be proficient in both Limb Damage and Burst Damage. This way, you can adapt to various demon builds and playstyles.
4. Upgrading Your Equipment
As you defeat demons, you’ll collect materials like Crimson Sand and Sharpening Stone. These can be used to upgrade your weapon at the blacksmith.
- Affinity: Upgrading affinity increases your ability damage. For example, each 3.5 points of affinity provides a 1% damage boost. Aim for a high affinity for better combat performance.
5. Tips on How to Leveling Up
Around levels 50 to 60, you should have enough abilities to take on demons effectively. At this point, it’s your choice whether to invest points or save them. When you reach level 100, that’s when you’ll want to start investing your points to unlock advanced abilities like Surge.
Remember, being a Slayer in Demon Hunter takes practice and patience. Focus on completing the Slayer exam, mastering your breathing styles, and effectively managing your combat strategies. With time, you’ll become a formidable Slayer.
