In the world of VTubing, where anonymity and digital personas reign, it’s easy to forget that behind every avatar lies a real person. Most VTubers build their fanbases through hard work, creative content, and connecting with their audience.

However, Gumpai, a VTuber who was once an up-and-coming content creator, learned the hard way that a single entitled post can destroy everything she had built. Her career took a nosedive after she posted a controversial tweet accusing a fan of being a scammer, and her inability to back down led to a massive public fallout. Here’s the breakdown of how one post unraveled her future.

The Incident That Sparked the Downfall

On November 24, 2024, Gumpai made a tweet accusing an independent toy maker, identified as Kusa, of stealing her character and profiting from it by creating and selling plushies without her permission.

She was particularly upset over the quality of the plushies, claiming that they were poorly made and did not match the character’s design. She further accused Kusa of profiting off other VTubers’ characters without proper association or profit-sharing.

However, things started going south quickly. Gumpai’s accusations were immediately challenged by the community, including seasoned VTubers and fans who rallied behind Kusa. Community Notes, a feature on Twitter that allows users to fact-check posts, stepped in, providing a detailed explanation of the situation.

It turned out that Kusa wasn’t a scammer but an indie artist from Vietnam who had created a few leftover plushies for personal commissions. He had explained that he was simply trying to sell them to avoid wasting materials, offering a product to the community rather than exploiting it.

Gumpai’s Escalating Entitlement

Despite the clarification, Gumpai doubled down. Instead of apologizing, she sarcastically dismissed her critics, mocking the plushie’s quality further and making light of the situation. She even suggested that those who purchased the plushies were at fault for not realizing the subpar quality.

The damage escalated when she made insensitive comments about Kusa’s business practices, including a bizarre rant about the cost of living in Vietnam, implying that Kusa had no right to make a profit. This bizarre and tone-deaf rhetoric sparked outrage among fans and fellow creators alike, leading to even more backlash.

Her attitude only worsened when she was confronted with the fact that she had been crowdfunded by her own community, receiving over 331 gifts from supporters. Her hypocrisy was apparent when she continued to demand free merchandise from others while she herself had received generous support. Instead of acknowledging her mistakes, Gumpai attempted to deflect by calling out her critics as hypocrites.

The situation quickly spiraled beyond just a few angry tweets. Major VTubers, such as Bao and Pipkin Pippa, publicly distanced themselves from Gumpai, condemning her behavior. VTuber merch companies also took notice.

Gumpai’s reputation continued to crumble, and her once-hopeful future as a content creator disintegrated. Fans began to realize that her previous success wasn’t due to her talent but rather her reliance on others.

In an attempt to salvage some credibility, she launched her own online store, but it was clear her antics had soured the potential for success. Her store featured overpriced merchandise, including a €28 sticker, further highlighting her sense of entitlement and lack of understanding of what it takes to succeed in the VTuber community.

Gumpai’s fall from grace is a reminder of how quickly things can spiral out of control in the digital age, especially when entitlement and a lack of self-awareness take hold. Her refusal to apologize and learn from her mistakes ensured that her career came to a crashing halt.

While it’s tempting to feel invincible in the online space, one bad decision can have lasting consequences, especially when you’re in the public eye. Gumpai’s case serves as a cautionary tale for others hoping to make a name in the VTubing world: always be mindful of how your actions and words can impact not just your career but also the community around you.
