The latest Dead Rails update in 16 May brings in a brand-new potion crafting system that adds a creative layer to gameplay. You can now mix liquids to produce powerful potions that revive enemies, heal allies, or even burn entire outposts. This guide explains how to craft all four potions, what ingredients you’ll need, and how each one works in-game. Let’s break down every potion recipe in Dead Rails and how to use them effectively.

How Potion Crafting Works in Dead Rails

To craft potions, you’ll need Unicorn Blood as the base ingredient. It’s the core component in all potion recipes. You’ll also need to collect other liquids—like Water, Kerosene, Blood, and Zombie Blood—from puddles or enemy corpses. Using bottles, you can collect, mix, and pour these potions directly onto the ground. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Collect Unicorn Blood by killing a unicorn and immediately using a bottle to scoop the liquid (it evaporates quickly).
  2. Collect secondary liquids from puddles, NPC corpses, or loot spawns.
  3. Mix the two liquids on the ground to form a potion puddle.
  4. Bottle the potion to use it later or pour it directly onto targets.

All Potion Recipes in Dead Rails

1. Primordial Potion

  • Recipe: Unicorn Blood + Water
  • Effect: Reanimates dead enemies, turning them into allies.
  • Usage: Pour the potion over dead enemies (like zombies or outlaws) to revive them. Once reanimated, they’ll fight on your side.

Tip: You can use this to build a temporary army during big fights or events.

2. Holy Water

  • Recipe: Unicorn Blood + Water (Same as Primordial Potion)
  • Effect: Burns enemies when they walk through the puddle.
  • Usage: Pour the potion on the ground and lure zombies or enemies into the area. They will catch fire and take burning damage over time.

Note: You can no longer throw holy water—only pour it, so planning placement is important.

3. Devil’s Tears

  • Recipe: Unicorn Blood + Kerosene
  • Effect: Ignites into a massive fire zone when set ablaze.
  • Usage: After crafting and pouring, use a Molotov or torch to ignite it. Anything in the area, including yourself (if not careful), will be set on fire.

Warning: If you’re not playing the Arsonist class (who is immune to fire), this potion can be deadly for you too.

4. Angel’s Tears

  • Recipe: Unicorn Blood + Normal Blood (from NPCs or zombies)
  • Effect: Heals anything it touches, including players and animals.
  • Usage: Pour the potion on the ground and stand in it or guide allies over it. Great for quick healing without using items.

Tip: Useful for healing your horse, allies, or yourself after combat.

Tips for Efficient Potion Crafting

  • Keep multiple empty bottles on hand so you can collect various liquids during combat or exploration.
  • Unicorn Blood evaporates quickly, so be ready to bottle it immediately after killing a unicorn.
  • Use Scorched Earth weather conditions (where liquids fall from the sky) to gather rare ingredients like kerosene and unicorn blood more easily.
  • Avoid fire hazards when using Devil’s Tears unless you’re using the Arsonist class or are confident in your positioning.

The potion system in Dead Rails brings a lot of new tactical opportunities. Whether you’re setting fire to a horde of zombies, resurrecting fallen enemies to fight for you, or healing your allies in the middle of battle, mastering these potions can turn the tide in any situation.

Experiment with different combinations and see which potion suits your playstyle best. Among the four, Devil’s Tears is currently the most destructive, while Angel’s Tears offers life-saving support. Keep your bottles ready, and get creative with your strategies.
