How to Start in DIG
Your journey begins in Fox Town, the starting area. Early on, your goal is simple: dig, sell, and save up for your first key shovel — the Lucky Shovel. This shovel has solid base stats that give you the push needed to move on to more challenging zones.
Where to Go Next

After getting the Lucky Shovel, head to Cinder Shores. The terrain here is tougher, but the loot is much more rewarding. You’ll be introduced to the Bell Shovel and Ruby Shovel. The Ruby Shovel is your best bet because of its superior digging power and control.
From there, you’ll eventually unlock Verdant Vale, where the Jam Shovel used to be the go-to. However, it’s now outclassed by the Spore Spade Shovel, which is better for both digging efficiency and long-term value. Later zones like Rooftop Woodlands and Shadow Deep demand higher-tier tools and come with tougher soil and stronger enemies, marking the shift into the late-game phase.
Throughout your journey, you’ll occasionally see glowing dig spots. These are random spawns but are always worth your time — they usually contain rare items or valuable drops that give a major boost to your income. Prioritize these over regular digging.
Don’t Skip Quests
Quests play a big role in progression. Focus on:
- One-time quests that offer exclusive tools.
- Repeatable quests that reward cash or rare items.
These quests aren’t just side tasks — many are tied to better shovels or hidden upgrades. Some even give you buffs that help you dig more efficiently.
Join the Combat Guild
Once you’re strong enough, talk to Cole Blood, leader of the Combat Guild. He appears near central zones or boss arenas. His bounties revolve around taking down bosses, which are a great source of rare loot — including powerful shovels like the Abyssal Shovel and Candlelight Shovel. Always have a Combat Guild bounty active so you don’t miss out on the loot during boss spawns.
Visit Tom’s Bakery

Old Tom, found in a hidden cave between Rooftop Woodlands and Cinder Approach, gives out daily quests that are usually simple but rewarding. His tasks might ask you to dig up certain materials or track down rare resources. The rewards? Unique shovels and pastries that give you temporary buffs like extra haste, luck, or dig power. These quests are repeatable and align well with normal digging activities.
Best Shovel Progression Path in DIG
Shovel progression depends on your level and your digging skill. Here’s a simplified path to follow:
Level 1 – 7
- Toy Shovel – Faster, but harder to control.
- Training Shovel – Easier control for beginners.
Level 7 – 15
- Ruby Shovel – Best in class for early mid-game.
- Bell Shovel – A solid alternative if Ruby isn’t available.
- Abyssal Shovel – Can be obtained by beating King Crab. Poor haste, but high strength.
Level 15 – 25
- Spore Spade Shovel – Spawns a Luck Totem and works for both dirt and rock.
- Jam Shovel – Still viable, but nerfed.
- Candlelight Shovel – Free if you beat the Candlelight Phantom boss.
Level 25 – 40
- Archaic Shovel – Good balance of strength and control.
- Frigid Shovel – Tempting but overpriced unless needed.
- Candlelight Shovel – Still holds up for free-to-play users.
Level 40 – 50
- Gold Digger Shovel – Comes with the Golden Mutation; solid value for money.
- Obsidian Shovel – Only buy if you want the design or extra control.
- Monstrous Shovel – Good, but not a must-buy.
Level 50+
- Prismatic Shovel – Arguably the best end-game shovel. Great stats and durability.
- Starfire Shovel – Strong, but not worth the high price tag.
- Solstice Shovel – A prestige item with limited value compared to Prismatic.
Don’t waste money on minor upgrades; save for meaningful stat jumps. Always have a goal: new shovel, quest line, or boss bounty. Take advantage of glowing holes and pastry buffs for faster gains. Only enchant end-game shovels like Prismatic or Starfire for maximum effect. Progressing in DIG isn’t just about digging non-stop — it’s about smart decisions and resource management. From choosing the right shovel to completing key quests and taking down bosses, each move you make contributes to faster, more effective gameplay. Stick to this progression path, and you’ll have a much smoother and more rewarding time in DIG.
