If you’re braving the wilds in 99 Nights in the Forest, choosing the right melee weapon can be the difference between survival and a quick death. Whether you’re hunting rabbits or fending off wolves, each weapon has its strengths and weaknesses. In this guide, we’ll rank the best melee weapons from worst to best based on damage, speed, range, and overall effectiveness. Check out our Class Tier List for the game 99 Nights in the Forest!

  • OWL ENEMIES COMING in 8 August 2025 – Patch

1. Old Axe – Worst Overall

  • Rabbit Kills: 5 swings
  • Wolf Kills: 8 swings
  • Availability: Default for all classes except Lumberjack

The Old Axe is the most basic weapon and mainly designed for chopping trees. When it comes to combat, it falls short. It’s weak and slow, and while every player starts with it, you should replace it as soon as possible.

2. Good Axe – Basic but Better

  • Rabbit Kills: 4 swings
  • Wolf Kills: 6 swings
  • Availability: Default for Lumberjack, found in chests or from the Pelt Trader

This is an improvement over the Old Axe, but still not ideal. It’s better suited for players early in the game, especially if you’re running the Lumberjack class. Still, there are stronger options you can get with a little effort.

3. Chainsaw – Fast but Flawed

  • Damage: Lower base damage
  • Attack Speed: High
  • Availability: Ruby Chests

The Chainsaw has a cool factor, but in practice, it’s not the most effective. It has a short range, and you’ll find yourself chasing down enemies more often. Although it swings quickly, the lack of range and power hurts its viability. It’s fun, but not optimal for serious fighting.

4. Strong Axe – Solid Mid-Tier Pick

  • Rabbit Kills: 3 swings
  • Wolf Kills: 4 swings
  • Availability: Chests or Pelt Trader

Now we’re talking. The Strong Axe offers a balanced mix of power and range. It’s clearly better than the previous options, and you can rely on it to deal with most mobs efficiently.

5. Spear – Reliable and Easy to Get

  • Rabbit Kills: 2 swings
  • Wolf Kills: 4 swings
  • Availability: Chests or Pelt Trader

The Spear is a fan favorite. It’s accessible, effective, and offers good range and kill speed. You can take out most enemies quickly, and it’s widely available, making it one of the best picks for players who want performance without grinding for rare loot.

6. Katana – Stylish, But Same as Spear

  • Stats: Identical to the Spear
  • Availability: Assassin Class Exclusive

The Katana shares the same stats as the Spear, so there’s no real gameplay advantage. The only difference is style—it looks cooler, but it doesn’t hit harder or faster. Unless you’re playing Assassin, you won’t be able to access it.

7. Mace (Morning Star) – Best Melee Weapon

  • Rabbit Kills: 1 swing
  • Wolf Kills: 2 swings (normal & alpha)
  • Attack Speed: Slow
  • Availability: Gold Chests

The Mace, also known as the Morning Star, tops the list as the most powerful melee weapon in the game. It hits like a truck, and while it’s slower, the sheer damage output makes up for it. You can clear mobs faster and more safely, and it’s your best bet for tough encounters. However, it’s locked behind Gold Chests, so it might take time to get.

If you’re just starting out, aim for the Spear as your go-to weapon until you can get the Mace. The Katana is a nice bonus if you’re using the Assassin class, but it offers no performance advantage over the Spear. Meanwhile, avoid the Old Axe and Chainsaw unless you have no other option. Want to dominate the forest? Pick your melee weapons wisely and always upgrade when you can. Let us know what your favorite weapon is in the comments—especially if you’ve unlocked the mighty Mace!
