99 Nights in the Forest Lava Fishing Guide – How to Catch Volcanic Fish
One of the hidden features in 99 Nights in the Forest is the ability to go Lava Fishing. While most players stick to regular ponds for food, you can actually cast your fishing rod into the pools of lava inside the Volcano Biome to catch unique Volcanic Fish. These work the same as normal fish when it comes to replenishing Hunger, but they’re much rarer and add some variety to your survival.
What Is Lava Fishing?
Lava Fishing is a secret mechanic that lets you fish in the Volcano Biome’s lava pools. Instead of regular fish, you’ll pull up special Volcanic species that can be cooked and eaten. Not many players realize this feature exists, which makes it a fun discovery for anyone exploring deeper into the game.
Where to Lava Fish in 99 Nights in the Forest
To start fishing in lava, you’ll need to:
- Upgrade Your Fishing Rod – While you can technically try with a basic rod, most players recommend using at least a Good Rod or Strong Rod for better success rates.
- Travel to the Volcano Biome – Head away from your camp until you notice dead, leafless trees and glowing lava pools with smoke rising from them. That’s when you know you’re in the right area.
- Approach a Lava Pool – Equip your rod and cast into the lava just like you would in a pond.
Types of Volcanic Fish
Currently, there are two Volcanic fish available in 99 Nights in the Forest:
- Lava Eel – The most common Volcanic fish you’ll catch.
- Lionfish – Rarer compared to Lava Eel, but still obtainable in lava pools.
Both types can be cooked just like standard fish. Once prepared, they restore Hunger, making them practical for survival in the harsher environments of the Volcano Biome.
Interestingly, the Fishing Hut’s wooden board, which tracks collectible fish, used to list 9 species (including a boot). Now it shows 11, which confirms the two new Volcanic fish.
Why Try Lava Fishing?
- Provides an alternative food source in the Volcano Biome.
- Unique collectible fish for completionists.
- Faster access to Hunger recovery without needing to head back to safer ponds.
Lava Fishing in 99 Nights in the Forest is a clever hidden mechanic that rewards curious players who test the limits of the game. While the Volcanic fish aren’t drastically different from normal ones in terms of survival benefits, they’re a cool addition that makes exploring the Volcano Biome even more rewarding. If you haven’t tried it yet, grab a Strong Rod and see what you can pull from the lava.
