Blade & Soul Heroes is the newest entry in the Blade & Soul universe, launching globally on September 24th, 2025, for both PC and mobile. Unlike the classic MMO, this is a collectible action RPG where you gather over 40 heroes and build a five-person team to tackle PvE and PvP content. But with its gacha mechanics, the big question is: is it truly free-to-play, or just another pay-to-win game?

What Blade & Soul Heroes Offers

Blade & Soul Heroes isn’t a traditional MMO where you pick a class like Blademaster or Assassin. Instead, it combines:

  • Collectible Heroes: Recruit and level up a roster of heroes, each with unique skills, roles, and elemental types.
  • Dual Combat System: Switch between real-time action mode for exploration and turn-based mode for PvP or specific events.
  • Hero Roles: Attackers, defenders, supporters, and tacticians.
  • Elemental Types: Dark, fire, water, poison, lightning, and typeless—exploiting elemental weaknesses is key for success.

The game’s story is a prequel set three years before the original, following the new protagonist Usall as she battles the Heavens Fall Cult.

1. Progression and Gear System

Progression is a mix of player-friendly and potentially pay-to-win mechanics:

  • Shared Gear: Weapons and armor can be equipped by any hero in your roster, making it easier to experiment and power up multiple characters.
  • Imbue System: True hero power comes from pulling duplicates of the same hero, similar to the constellation system in Genshin Impact. This is where the gacha grind is most noticeable.

Developers have promised free-to-play friendly mechanics, including:

  • Regular free summons
  • A favor system to work toward specific heroes
  • A transparent pity system guaranteeing high-rarity heroes after a set number of pulls

2. Endgame Content

The game offers a seasonal endgame model with a mix of PvE and PvP:

  • PvE: Solo boss trials, four-player raids, large boss battles, and guild content.
  • PvP: Turn-based tactical combat and Nameplate Bingo, a mini-game where strategy rewards exclusive items.

Success relies on building a wide roster of heroes and using them effectively in both combat modes.

3. Pay-to-Win Concerns – All Things that Needs Money?

The main concern comes from the game’s Korean version, which reportedly had aggressive monetization:

  • Ultimate Skills Locked: Core abilities require three duplicate hero copies.
  • Battle Passes and Paid Subscriptions: Multiple monetization layers create a power gap between free and paying players.
  • Korean Launch Issues: The game struggled post-launch, leading to layoffs and a negative reputation among veterans.

While the global release promises changes, the duplicate system is confirmed, leaving uncertainty about whether ultimate skills will remain locked behind the gacha.

Blade & Soul Heroes is ambitious and innovative: The dual combat system is a fresh approach for cross-platform gameplay. Sharable gear reduces grinding and encourages experimentation.

However, its history of pay-to-win mechanics raises a red flag. The global version’s success will hinge on whether NCSoft adapts and genuinely supports free-to-play players, or if it leans heavily on gacha monetization again.

For fans of the series, this is a game to watch closely. The innovative systems are tempting, but cautious players may want to see how the global release handles monetization before fully investing.
