A new feature from Roblox is causing major controversy in the community. The company recently revealed an AI-based age verification system that will soon become a requirement for all players, and it’s already making a lot of people upset. What’s Changing

Starting in 2026, Roblox will require every player to complete a new AI selfie verification. This means users must take a short video selfie using the Roblox app, which will then be analyzed by an AI system to estimate their age.

Depending on the result, certain features will be locked or unlocked — for example, older players will keep access to chat and voice chat, while younger players will have restrictions.

The bigger concern is what happens if you don’t verify your age at all. Roblox has confirmed that accounts without verification will lose all chat functions, including text chat, experience chat, and voice chat.

This test has already started for some users, and the reaction hasn’t been positive. A recent forum post discussing the change has gathered thousands of complaints, and a poll showed 99% of users disagree with the update.

Player Concerns

Roblox AI Age Verification Update Sparks Player Backlash

Most players aren’t against safety measures but are worried about privacy and accuracy. Roblox is working with a third-party company called Persona to handle the verification process.

Persona claims to delete selfies after 30 days, but many users are concerned about the risk of data leaks. Roblox has already faced several data breaches in the past, which only adds to the community’s fear.

There’s also the question of AI accuracy. Players worry that the system might misjudge their age — especially those who look younger or older than they really are. If that happens, the only fix would be to upload a photo ID, which not every player can provide.

The Bigger Issue

Many users believe Roblox is focusing on the wrong problem. Instead of adding AI verification, they argue that Roblox should improve its moderation system and support team, which often fail to remove inappropriate games or respond to reports quickly.

The AI age verification system might come with good intentions, but it’s clear that the Roblox community isn’t convinced. Players are worried about privacy, security, and fairness.

Unless Roblox can guarantee safety and accuracy, this update could end up doing more harm than good — and that’s why many believe it’s one of the most disliked changes the platform has ever announced.
