Mage Arena is one of those games that looks simple at first, but the deeper you go, the more systems and tricks you discover. If you’re just starting out and unsure how spells, crafting, biomes, or the crypt work, this guide covers all the core basics you need to get moving without confusion. Also check out our Mage Arena Spells Guide and more!

This beginner’s guide breaks down spell casting, cooldowns, crafting recipes, biomes, game objectives, and essential tips for surviving dungeons like the Mausoleum. Whether you want smoother fights, faster crafting, or a clearer idea of how the map works, this guide lays out everything step-by-step.

1. Spell Casting Basics

Mage Arena Complete Beginner’s Guide to Everything You Need to Know

Every spell in Mage Arena has its own cooldown timer. You can only cast a spell when its icon in your spellbook lights up. Here are the approximate cooldowns based on in-game testing:

  • Fireball – about 5 seconds
  • Magic Missile – about 6 seconds
  • Freeze – about 8 seconds
  • Wormhole – 45 seconds total (20 seconds active time + 25 seconds cooldown)

How Wormhole Works

Wormhole uses two commands:

  • Say “worm” to place the entrance
  • Say “hole” to place the exit

Fireballs can pass through wormholes, and Freeze can close them. This opens up a lot of creative movement and attack options.

A Note on Voice Accents

If you’re using the British accent option, some commands may not register well. The basic/default accent is the most consistent. You can reset your voice option through the pause menu.

2. Crafting & Items

Crafting happens at the stump in your base. You can check recipes on the scroll there, but here’s a clear breakdown of what each item does.

Movement & Utility Tools

  • Boinger (Rock + Mushroom)
A bouncing melee weapon that launches you off surfaces.
  • Fungal Walking Stick (Mushroom + Wood)
Boosts your jump height when equipped.
  • Walking Stick (Wood + Wood)
Slightly increases walk and sprint speed.
  • Mushroom Man (Mushroom + Mushroom)
Follows you and lets you bounce for extra height. Press G to drop it.
  • Levitator (Crystal + Wood)
Lifts players into the air. Can be used on yourself with proper timing.
  • Spore Frog (Mushroom + Frog)
A reusable smoke cloud for covering movement or ambushes.
  • Throwing Stone (Rock + Rock)
Blocks incoming projectiles like Fireball and Magic Missile.

Weapons

  • Frog Spear (Wood + Frog)
Forces players to drop their items, including Excalibur.
  • Frog Sword (Frog + Rock)
    Basic melee weapon.
  • Bramble (Wood + Stone)
Creates damaging roots that stay on the ground for about 2 minutes.
  • Dart Gun (Crystal + Frog)
A ranged weapon that inverts enemy controls.

Golem

  • Golem (Crystal + Crystal)
Follows you and attacks enemies. Immune to magic and extremely strong.

Vision Tool

  • Orb (Crystal + Crystal)
Shows you the point of view of a random opponent.

3. Capturing Biomes

Mage Arena Spell Guide All Spells, How They Work, and What They Do!

Biomes contain resources needed for crafting. You gain more materials by capturing the biome tied to that resource.

  • Mushroom Biome → Mushrooms
  • Crystal Caves → Crystals
  • Frog Bog → Frogs
  • Misty Mountains → Rocks
  • Forest Hills → Logs

Stand near a biome’s flag until it rises. Once captured, a goblin will periodically deliver resources to your base.

4. Game Objectives

Mage Arena follows simple match rules:

  • Capture biomes to increase your spell strength
  • Push toward the enemy base
  • Capture their base to disable their respawns
  • Defeat remaining players to win the match

Your respawn status is shown by the icon in the bottom-right:

  • Green icon – you can respawn
  • Red icon – respawn disabled

5. The Mausoleum & Excalibur

Excalibur Mage Arena Guide How to Find, Craft, and Use the Strongest Blade!

The crypt-like dungeon, called the Mausoleum, is where Excalibur’s two parts spawn. You must bring a torch—navigating without one is nearly impossible. What You’ll Face

  • Skeletons split into smaller parts rather than dying outright
  • Skeleton mage deals heavy damage with ranged spells
  • Blue lanterns can be lit for visibility
  • Vases may hide spells underneath

How to Get Excalibur

  1. Enter the Mausoleum with a torch
  2. Clear all skeletons and the mage
  3. Find both pieces of the sword (spawn far apart)
  4. Leave the way you came
  5. Press B to teleport back to base
  6. Place both parts on the crafting table

Excalibur deals 100 damage per hit and stays in your inventory even after death.

6. Gnome Forest

In the Gnome Forest, you can trade items with gnomes. Their offers are random, so don’t expect fair trades.

7. Additional Spells

Mage Arena Complete Beginner’s Guide to Everything You Need to Know

Here are key spells you’ll encounter:

  • Blink – short-range teleport
  • Dark Blast – shoots a long energy beam
  • Wisp – stronger homing projectile
  • Thunderbolt – lightning strike at your cursor
  • Divine Light – heals you and nearby allies

The weed pipe has unclear effects but appears to be cosmetic for now.

So, Always carry a torch when entering the Mausoleum. Skeleton legs can sneak up and deal chip damage. Capture central biomes early for faster spell growth. Use mobility tools like Mushroom Man or Levitator to reach high ground. Don’t rely on trades from gnomes—treat them as bonus RNG. Mage Arena has a lighthearted tone, and the best way to enjoy it is to explore freely and experiment with spells and items. Once you get used to spell timing, movement tools, and biome control, the game becomes much more rewarding. If you need a full crafting chart, spell tier list, or advanced combat guide, I can create those too.
