For free-to-play players, the License Journey has become the main method to unlock Pokémon in Pokémon Unite. Since most Unite Licenses in the shop are now gem-only, players must rely on this new progression system to expand their roster without spending money. This guide explains how the License Journey works, how to unlock any Pokémon using points, and the difference between Universal License Points and Exclusive License Points.
What Is the License Journey?
The License Journey is a stage-based reward path found in the main lobby (lower-left corner). Every Pokémon can be unlocked here through stage progression rather than gem purchases. However, each stage must be cleared in order, and you cannot freely buy Pokémon out of sequence—unless it is a special selection stage.
Method 1: Unlock Pokémon with Universal License Points
Universal License Points (blue points) are the main currency used to progress through stages. Key rules of stage unlocking:
- You must unlock Pokémon in order.
- You cannot skip a Pokémon’s stage to buy another one.
- Example: You cannot buy Alolan Ninetales at Stage 2 if you haven’t bought Pikachu from Stage 1.
- The only exception is Special Selection Stages, where you can choose one Pokémon to unlock freely.
Once you choose a Pokémon in the special selection:
- That Pokémon becomes your current stage target
- You must buy it first before progressing again
- Check the cost carefully before selecting, as saving points takes time
Also, any Pokémon license you already own will be automatically skipped, letting you progress faster through later stages.
Method 2: Unlock Pokémon with Exclusive License Points
Exclusive License Points are a different currency used to unlock specific Pokémon. How it works:
- These points behave like assembling a puzzle
- Each Pokémon has its own icon on the exclusive point, meaning the points only apply to that Pokémon
- You cannot use exclusive points to unlock a different Pokémon
Exclusive vs Universal Points:
- Color Blue Pokémon-specific icon
- Usage Any Pokémon license in order Only the Pokémon shown
- How to Get Missions, Events, Daily Special or limited events only
How to Earn License Points
You can obtain points from many sources, including:
- Battle Pass (Free & Premium tracks)
- Prize Packs
- Daily Missions
- Returning Trainer Event (now gives License Points instead of Aeos Coins)
- Joining the official Discord once rewards 25 Points
- Future special events will also grant points
License Points now replace Aeos Coins as the free unlock currency for Pokémon.
So, Always check point cost before choosing a Pokémon in Special Selection. Don’t rush your pick—rare or expensive Pokémon give better value long term. Completing events consistently speeds up your License Journey more than grinding battles. Universal License Points should be saved for harder-to-reach stages.
With consistent play and smart choices, you can unlock every Pokémon available without spending gems. Keep progressing through stages, participate in events, and prioritize high-value licenses to build a strong roster over time.
