Fish Runes are required to complete one of the most important questlines in Abyss. If you are trying to finish the Crab quest and unlock its final reward, you must collect all seven Fish Runes scattered across different regions. Some of them require quest keys, so you cannot just walk up and open every chest immediately. What Are Fish Runes in Abyss?

Fish Runes are locked rune chests tied to the Crab questline. To complete the quest fully, you must unlock all seven. Each rune requires a specific key obtained from NPC questlines. Once you gather every rune, return to the Crab at spawn to complete the objective and unlock the reward.

All Fish Rune Locations and Requirements

Below is the complete list of all seven rune locations.

1. First Fish Rune – Scientist Area (Kraken Quest Key)

Requirement: Complete all Kraken quests
Reward from Kraken: Forgotten Key Rune

After finishing the Kraken questline, head behind the Scientist near spawn. Move past the elevated structure behind him. You’ll find the rune chest hidden behind that raised area. Insert the Forgotten Key, wait for the animation to finish, then open the chest to collect your first Fish Rune.

2. Second Fish Rune – Geode Area (Mr. Black Quest Key)

Requirement: Complete Mr. Black’s questline

Return to spawn and go to the area where you open geodes. Behind that section, you’ll find the second rune chest. If you cannot open it, you need to complete Mr. Black’s quests. He requires mutated fish submissions, and the grind can take time. Once finished, you will receive the key needed to unlock this rune.

Ancient Sands Runes

The next two runes are located in Ancient Sands.

3. Third Fish Rune – Near Marcus (Ancient Sands Key)

Requirement: Complete Marcus’ quests

Teleport or travel to Ancient Sands. Find Marcus and finish his questline. Once completed, you’ll receive the Ancient Sands Key. From Marcus’ location, move upward and slightly right. You’ll find the rune chest nearby. Insert the key and loot it.

4. Fourth Fish Rune – Elevated Platform (Grumpy Hank Key)

Requirement: Complete Grumpy Hank’s quests

Inside Ancient Sands, locate a tall building near the edge of the area. Climb the ladders all the way up to find Grumpy Hank. Complete all of his quests (including catching special ancient fish). He will reward you with another Ancient Sands Key. Use it on the elevated platform nearby to unlock the fourth rune.

Spirit Roots Runes

The remaining three runes are located in Spirit Roots. Before continuing, make sure you complete Lumi’s questline to remove the barrier blocking part of the area. Then visit Victor at the back of Spirit Roots. Completing his 4th and 7th quests will grant you two Spirit Keys. You’ll also need to complete Golem’s second quest inside the cave system to receive another Spirit Key.

5. Fifth Fish Rune – Bottom of Spirit Cave

Enter the cave system near the Spirit Roots entrance. Go deeper toward the Eye Fish area. At the bottom of the cave, you’ll find the fifth rune chest. Be careful with oxygen levels and hostile fish. Insert the Spirit Key and loot it.

6. Sixth Fish Rune – Upper Cave Exit

After leaving the deeper cave section, swim upward toward the exit path. You’ll find the sixth rune chest along the way. Unlock it using one of the Spirit Keys obtained earlier.

7. Seventh Fish Rune – Inner Cave Path

Return into the cave system and continue along the alternate inner route. Deeper inside, you’ll find the final rune chest. Insert your last Spirit Key to unlock the seventh Fish Rune.

How to Start the Crab Quest (If It Doesn’t Trigger)

If you have unlocked all runes but do not see the Crab quest, you need to collect the Crab Scroll first. Crab Scroll Location:

• Go to Ancient Sands.
• Travel to the far edge of the map.
• Enter a small cave opening.
• Inside, climb up near a large crab statue.
• The Crab Scroll is located on top.

Bring the scroll back to the Crab at spawn to activate the quest. If you already collected all seven runes, the quest will complete instantly.

Crab Quest Reward

After turning in all seven Fish Runes, the Crab rewards you with the Crab Claw artifact.

Crab Claw Stats:

• +25% Oxygen
• +3.5s Cooldown
• +16% Damage

It’s a solid mid-tier artifact and useful for deeper dives and combat situations.

Collecting all seven Fish Runes in Abyss requires completing multiple NPC questlines across different regions: Kraken, Mr. Black, Marcus, Grumpy Hank, Victor, and Golem. This is not a quick objective. It involves grinding mutated fish, ancient fish, and progressing through Spirit Roots. Once completed, you gain access to the Crab Claw and fully finish one of the game’s key progression paths. If you are aiming for 100% completion or stronger artifacts, finishing this rune questline is absolutely worth it.
