The Vagabond route in Dokkodo is one of the main story paths that focuses heavily on duels, dojo battles, and character progression. Unlike simple side quests, this questline includes cutscenes, dialogue choices, boss fights, and missions that require you to move between different regions like Kyoto and Nara.

Most objectives are marked with a waypoint on your map, but certain steps can still confuse new players, especially when boss mechanics and dialogue choices affect progression. This guide explains every mission in chronological order and what you need to do to complete each part smoothly.

1. Streets of Kyoto

This is the starting mission of the Vagabond questline.

Objectives:

  • Walk the streets and observe swordsmen.
  • Talk to Yoshioka Seijuro.
  • Find a quiet place for tea.
  • Enter the Teahouse and buy tea.

You must speak with Yoshioka Seijuro to progress. If another player is interacting with him, you’ll need to wait until they finish. After that, head to the Teahouse and purchase tea to complete the sequence.

2. Against the Yoshioka

This mission introduces one of the first major combat challenges.

Objectives:

  • Locate the Yoshioka Dojo.
  • Sit down inside the dojo.
  • Interact with a pillow and choose the “STORM” option.

Press E on the pillow to begin the dojo assault. You will fight multiple waves of enemies before facing the boss, Ryohei Ueda. Enemies in this mission gradually introduce new mechanics. They read inputs frequently, meaning they react quickly to predictable attacks.

To counter this, mix up left and right swings instead of repeating the same pattern. Some players use high ping servers to reduce input reading effectiveness. However, this can cause hit detection issues, so use that method carefully.

3. The Storm Clears

After defeating the dojo boss:

  • Return to Takuan Soho at the inn.
  • Choose the “Overconfident” dialogue option or “…”

Both of these dialogue options allow you to continue the Vagabond route.

4. The Roads to Nara

  • Head toward the Gate to Nara.

This is a travel-focused mission with minimal combat.

5. Search of the Spear

  • Investigate the monk Hozoin In’ei in Nara.
  • Visit the first farm location.
  • Speak with the lone farmer NPC.

Interacting with the farmer completes this step and advances the questline.

6. The Temple Awaits

  • Find Kofukuji Temple.
  • Interact with the student outside the dojo.

This interaction triggers a boss fight against Hozoin Agon. Prepare for another serious duel, as this fight tests your spacing and timing.

7. The Old Monk

  • Speak with Hozoin In’ei.

He is the monk wearing orange clothing and working in the fields outside. Talk to him to continue.

8. Not Yet Ready

  • Reach Combat Experience level 25+.

You cannot proceed until you meet this requirement. Grind enemies, complete side objectives, or farm combat to level up faster.

9. The Second Spear

  • Go to the cliff behind Kofukuji Temple.
  • You have 300 seconds to reach it.

This is a timed objective, so avoid unnecessary fights along the way. Plan your route and move quickly.

The Vagabond questline in Dokkodo is heavily focused on skill-based combat and progression checks. Early missions teach you how to deal with input-reading enemies, while later quests test your level, positioning, and awareness. If you struggle during dojo fights, focus on mixing attack directions and avoiding predictable patterns. Make sure to reach Combat Experience 25 before attempting to progress further, and prepare properly before major boss encounters. By following this step-by-step order, you can clear the Vagabond route efficiently and avoid common mistakes that slow down progression.
