Power scaling in Bizarre Lineage doesn’t stop at weapons or skills. Late in the game, players start chasing stronger systems that give a real edge in fights. One of the most impactful options is the Dark Determination Edict, a high-risk, high-reward mechanic that can completely change how you handle combat.
Getting it isn’t simple. You’ll need to complete a set of challenging quests, deal with PvP pressure, and go through multiple Prestige resets. This guide walks you through what Dark Determination is, how to unlock it, and how to upgrade it efficiently.
What Is Dark Determination in Bizarre Lineage?
Dark Determination is an end-game Edict that gives your character a temporary stat boost during fights. When activated, it buffs your overall performance for a short duration, making it useful in clutch situations or high-level PvP.
However, there’s a catch. Once the buff ends, your character receives a temporary debuff that weakens your stats. This creates a risk-reward system where timing becomes very important. If used correctly, it can turn fights in your favor. If used poorly, it can leave you vulnerable.
How to Find the Determination NPC
Before starting the questline, you need to locate the NPC that gives the Dark Determination quests. The path is a bit hidden, so follow these steps carefully:
- Start by heading to the bus stop and interact with the Rhett NPC. Choose to travel to bus stop 14, which is the closest point to the quest location. From there, walk along the path until you reach the last red lamppost. This is your first marker that you’re heading in the right direction.
- After reaching the lamppost, turn around and move southeast. Keep walking until you find an area with a wooden lamppost. The Determination NPC will be nearby, standing slightly off to the left. This is where your questline begins.
All Dark Determination Quests Explained
To unlock Dark Determination, you must complete seven different quests. You can finish them in any order, but each one requires preparation and patience.
Selflessness
This quest requires you to defeat Yoshikage Kira (Bites the Dust) while using the Bloodlust Perk. To do this, you first need to unlock Prestige and farm enough shards. Bloodlust costs 5 Prestige Shards, so expect some grinding. Once ready, head to bus stop 1, trigger the raid, and defeat the boss. This is one of the more time-consuming tasks, especially if your build isn’t optimized.
Reticence
You need to win a 1v1 match while keeping your HP above 90%. This sounds simple but can be tricky in practice. The best approach is to challenge lower-level players or opponents who are less experienced. Play carefully, avoid unnecessary damage, and focus on clean fights rather than aggressive trades.
Piety
Winning three Gang Wars is required here. If you’re not already in a gang, you’ll need to join or create one. Coordination plays a big role, so working with active players makes this much easier. Random teams can slow you down, so try to play with people you can communicate with.
Faith
This quest tests your control under pressure. You must defeat your inner self while staying at 5% HP or lower. To start, go to the gym near bus stop 2 and meditate using the purple mats. Once inside the inner world, you’ll fight your clone. The key here is timing your attacks and not panicking at low health.
Hate
You need to grip five members of your own gang. This can be awkward if done randomly, so it’s better to coordinate with your teammates. Ask for help and take turns completing the requirement. This saves time and avoids unnecessary conflicts.
Purity
Winning three 1v1 matches in a row without losing is the goal here. Consistency matters more than aggression. Stick to a reliable build and avoid risky plays. If you lose, you’ll have to restart the streak, so patience is important.
Repose
This quest requires you to defeat ten players above level 40. It’s straightforward but can take time depending on player activity. Look for active PvP areas and focus on picking fights you can realistically win.
Prestige Requirements You Should Know
Dark Determination is locked behind the Prestige system, which means you’ll need to reset your progress more than once. First, you must Prestige to unlock the Bloodlust Perk needed for the Selflessness quest.
After completing all quests, you’ll need to Prestige again to finally obtain the Edict. Each Prestige requires reaching level 50 and paying in-game currency to the Arch Mage NPC near bus stop 10.
Keep in mind that Prestige resets your level, stats, abilities, and progression. This makes planning important, as you’ll need to rebuild your character multiple times.
How Dark Determination Works in Combat
Once unlocked, you can equip Dark Determination in your hotbar. It activates when your HP drops below 60%, triggering a 15-second stat boost that improves your overall combat performance.
After the buff ends, a 10-second debuff kicks in, reducing your effectiveness. This means you should only use it when you’re confident you can finish the fight or gain a strong advantage during the buff window.
Dark Determination Upgrade Tiers and Bonuses
You can upgrade the Edict through the Arch Mage NPC by spending Prestige Shards. Each upgrade improves its effectiveness and eventually removes its downside.
Tier 1 (Base)
At the base level, Dark Determination increases your damage by 5%. While the boost is small, it still provides a noticeable improvement during activation, especially in early PvP encounters.
Tier 2
This upgrade adds a 5% defense boost. Combined with the damage bonus, it makes the Edict more balanced and slightly safer to use in longer fights where survivability matters.
Tier 3
At this stage, you gain passive healing during the buff, restoring 25 HP over time. This helps offset incoming damage and makes it easier to stay alive during intense battles.
Tier 4
This tier introduces lifesteal when attacking enemies with lower HP than yours. It rewards aggressive play and allows you to recover health while maintaining pressure on opponents.
Tier 5 (Max Tier)
The final upgrade is where Dark Determination becomes truly powerful. It extends the buff duration by 5 seconds and completely removes the debuff afterward. This eliminates the main drawback and makes the Edict far more reliable. As a bonus, your name appears blue on the leaderboard, showing your progression.
Dark Determination is one of the strongest late-game tools you can unlock in Bizarre Lineage, but it demands effort and planning. From PvP challenges to multiple Prestige resets, every step requires commitment. Once fully upgraded, though, it becomes a consistent and powerful advantage that can carry you through both PvE and PvP fights with much more control.
