Shells Beginner Guide – Best Tideclaw Progression, Sun Shard & Important Locations

Shells is one of the newest Roblox grinding games where players travel between islands, collect valuable shells, upgrade tools, and hunt for the best Tideclaws in the game. At first, progression can feel confusing because there are so many different tools, locations, events, and upgrades available.

Some players also waste resources early by buying the wrong equipment or rerolling traits too soon. This guide covers everything beginners need to know in Shells, including the best Tideclaw progression path, Sun Shard farming, important islands, quests, and useful beginner tips that will help you progress much faster.

1. Best Beginner Tool Progression in Shells

One of the biggest mistakes new players make is buying random tools without following a proper progression path. The goal is to slowly upgrade your Tideclaw while saving enough money for the stronger late-game tools. Here is the recommended progression path.

Your first grinding location will be Starter Island. There are several tools available here, but the best early-game choice is the Gold Sifter. This should be your first major goal because it makes shell farming much easier compared to the beginner equipment.

While farming here, avoid wasting trait rerolls on weak tools. Save those rerolls for late-game Tideclaws that you actually plan to keep for a long time. At the back of Starter Island, there is also a ghost NPC where players can buy the Haunted Tideclaw later in the game.

2. Crescent Shore Progression

After upgrading from the beginner area, your next destination should be Crescent Shore. This is considered the second major progression island for most players. The recommended Tideclaw here is:

  • RGB Tideclaw

This island also introduces an important mechanic called Waystones. Every island contains a teleporter that can be activated by holding the E key. Unlocking these teleporters allows you to fast travel between islands, which saves a huge amount of time later during farming and quests. Make sure you activate every Waystone whenever you discover a new island.

3. Sea Stack Island Secret Tideclaws

Once you are strong enough, head over to Sea Stack Island. This area contains hidden Tideclaws inside a secret area that many beginners completely miss.

The important tools here include:

  • Frosted Tideclaw
  • Crystal Tideclaw

These are strong mid-game options and help bridge the gap before unlocking the more expensive late-game tools. Farming here is highly recommended before buying the Haunted Tideclaw because the stats are much better than most earlier equipment. Exploring hidden areas is important in Shells because many valuable items and tools are not immediately visible.

4. Haunted Tideclaw Guide

The Haunted Tideclaw can be obtained back at Starter Island near the ghost NPC. Even though it is not the strongest Tideclaw in the game anymore, it is still one of the best progression tools for players moving into the late game.

The price is expensive for beginners, so you should only buy it after upgrading through the earlier islands first. Buying it too early can slow down your overall progress because you may not have enough farming power yet.

This Tideclaw is mainly useful for helping players transition into endgame farming locations.

5. How to Get the Solar Tideclaw

The Solar Tideclaw is considered one of the strongest Tideclaws in Shells and is located inside a cave at Calder Key Island. Inside the cave is a maze that players must complete before reaching the Tideclaw area. This can take some time because the maze is confusing for first-time players.

To unlock the Solar Tideclaw, you need:

  • 2.5 Million Shellings
  • Sun Shard

Solar Tideclaw Stats:

  • 260 Luck
  • 320 Collection Speed
  • 260 Mutation Amplifier
  • 450 Max Weight

This Tideclaw is extremely useful for farming rare shells and preparing for the final endgame grind.

6. How to Get Sun Shards

Sun Shards are rare materials required for obtaining the Solar Tideclaw. These can drop from Cow Direct enemies, but the drop rate is very low. One of the best times to farm Sun Shards is during the Eclipse event. The Eclipse happens every 3 hours depending on server uptime and provides:

  • Increased Sun Shard drop rates
  • Higher chance for Scorched Mutation
  • 2x luck boost

The Scorched Mutation gives a 1.7x value multiplier to shells, making the event very profitable for grinding money. There is also an extremely rare mutation called “???” which only has around a 0.01% chance to appear. This mutation gives a massive Shellings multiplier and is currently considered one of the best mutations in the game.

7. Best Endgame Tideclaw – Brine Blossom

The strongest Tideclaw currently available in Shells is the Brine Blossom located at Soulmer Island. To access this area, players must defeat Permisses first. After unlocking the zone, the Brine Blossom can be purchased for:

  • 10 Million Shellings

Brine Blossom Stats:

  • 360 Luck
  • 360 Collection Speed
  • 360 Mutation Amplifier
  • 560 Max Weight

This is currently considered the best farming tool in the game thanks to its extremely high overall stats.

However, obtaining it is not easy. Players must complete a special challenge where they have only one minute to collect shells with a higher total value than Tambuliss. Having a strong Tideclaw beforehand is highly recommended.

8. Important Beginner Tips in Shells

There are several mechanics beginners often ignore that can massively improve progression speed. So, Upgrade Your Hermit Crab, Your Hermit Crab can be upgraded to improve:

  • Luck
  • Speed
  • Storage Space
  • Weight Capacity

These upgrades make farming much smoother over time. You should constantly invest in your Hermit Crab whenever possible.

9. Equip Better Charms

Charms provide important passive boosts like:

  • Increased shell size
  • Better stats
  • Improved farming bonuses

Many players forget to equip charms entirely, which slows down progression unnecessarily.

10. Complete Every Island Quest

Each island contains quests that reward money and progression items. Completing quests while farming is one of the fastest ways to make Shellings early on. Skipping quests usually makes progression slower because you lose out on valuable rewards and unlocks.

11. Save Trait Rerolls for Endgame Tools

Do not waste rerolls on weak beginner Tideclaws. It is much smarter to save them for tools like:

  • Solar Tideclaw
  • Haunted Tideclaw
  • Brine Blossom

This will save resources and prevent unnecessary grinding later.

Shells has a surprisingly deep progression system once you start unlocking stronger Tideclaws and exploring later islands. The game becomes much easier once you understand the correct upgrade path and know which tools are actually worth farming for.

For most players, the best route is progressing from the Gold Sifter into the RGB Tideclaw, then moving toward Frosted or Crystal Tideclaws before eventually farming the Solar Tideclaw and Brine Blossom.

Along the way, make sure you participate in Eclipse events, complete quests, upgrade your Hermit Crab, and save your rerolls for late-game equipment. With the right progression path, you can go from beginner to endgame much faster without wasting Shellings or resources.
