Some of these features can improve your combat performance, while others simply make exploring and playing with friends much more convenient. If you’re just starting out or have already spent hours in Gakuran, here are five useful features and gameplay mechanics you may not have noticed.
1. Choose Your Fighting Style Based on Your Character’s Height
Many new players assume that making the tallest character automatically gives them an advantage during fights. However, height only becomes beneficial when paired with the right fighting style.
Shorter characters, typically around 4’11” to 5’5″, perform better with quicker combat styles because they attack faster and recover from cooldowns more quickly. Some of the best options for smaller characters include:
- Boxing
- Hikari
- Basic Fighting Style
These styles allow players to chain attacks more consistently and maintain pressure during close-range combat.
Meanwhile, taller characters—especially those standing over 6 feet—benefit from heavier fighting styles. Although their attacks are slower, they gain extra reach and deal more damage per hit. Recommended styles include:
- Wrestling
- Capoeira
- Slugger
Instead of choosing height based solely on appearance, consider matching it with the fighting style that complements your build.
2. Hair Color Rolls Depend on Your Character’s Ethnicity
If you’ve spent multiple rerolls trying to obtain a specific natural hair color, the game’s character system may be the reason you’re struggling.
In Gakuran, your available natural hair colors are influenced by your character’s ethnicity. For example, a Japanese character is significantly more likely to receive black hair during rerolls, while other ethnicities may have access to different natural color pools.
Fantasy hair colors such as:
- Blue
- Pink
- Purple
- White
- Red
are much rarer. These dyed colors reportedly have only about a 5% chance of appearing whenever you reroll your hairstyle.
Knowing this can save you from wasting unnecessary rerolls when searching for a specific appearance.
3. There’s a Basketball Court Behind the School
Not every activity in Gakuran revolves around fighting.
If you leave the school building and head toward the back of the campus, you’ll discover a basketball court where players can spend time with friends. Basketballs can be picked up directly from the nearby display stand, allowing anyone to start a casual game.
One issue players frequently encounter, however, is that people on public servers sometimes grab the basketballs and carry them away, making it difficult for others to use the court properly. While this can be frustrating, it’s still a fun location to visit when everything is working as intended.
4. Save Friends as Contacts for Easier Navigation
Finding friends in a crowded server can sometimes be surprisingly difficult, especially during large fights or busy roleplay sessions. Fortunately, Gakuran includes a Social Link feature that helps solve this problem.
To use it on PC:
- Press Alt to open your in-game phone.
- Navigate to the Social Link section.
- Exchange contacts with your friend.
After both players save each other’s contact information, a blue marker will appear above each person’s character. This makes it much easier to locate teammates while exploring the school or participating in combat.
For players who regularly join servers together, this feature is incredibly useful.
5. Music Keeps Playing Even After Closing Your Phone
Many players assume they must leave their in-game phone open while listening to music. In reality, that’s only partially true. If your character is wearing headphones, you can start playing music through your phone and then simply close the device.
The music will continue playing in the background until you manually pause or stop it. This small quality-of-life feature allows players to continue exploring, fighting, or roleplaying without having the phone interface covering part of the screen.
Gakuran includes plenty of hidden mechanics that aren’t immediately explained, making it easy to miss features that can improve your overall experience. Whether it’s selecting a fighting style that matches your character’s height, understanding how hair colors are generated, discovering the basketball court, using the Social Link system, or listening to music without keeping your phone open, these small details can make gameplay much smoother.
