Mine a Mountain Veins Guide: How to Find and Break Every Ore Vein

Veins are special ore deposits hidden inside the mountains in Mine a Mountain. Unlike normal crystals that can be found on the surface, veins are buried inside the rock and require a specific bomb to break open. Each vein contains its own group of crystals, making them important if you are looking for certain resources. However, finding a vein is not always easy because they only generate in specific parts of the mountain based on height and depth.

How Veins Work in Mine a Mountain

Veins are generated whenever the mountain regenerates, which happens once every hour. The game uses a noise-based system to decide where each vein is placed inside the mountain. Each type of ore has its own rules for where it can appear. The game checks the mountain’s height, the depth of the rock, and whether the location is actually inside the mountain.

Because of these rules, veins are usually easier to find around areas such as:

  • Cliff walls
  • Cave walls
  • Deep sections of the mountain
  • Areas that have already been mined
  • Exposed sections of buried rock

They are less likely to appear on open and gentle mountain slopes.

What Conditions Are Needed for a Vein?

A section of the mountain must meet several requirements before it can become a vein. There are four main conditions. First, the location must be solid rock inside the mountain. It cannot be open air or part of the mountain’s outer shell.

Second, the location must be within the correct height range for that particular ore. Different ores are found at different levels. Third, the ore must be buried deep enough below the surface. Every vein has a minimum depth requirement.

Finally, the location must be above the mountain’s dig floor. This means veins cannot generate below the lowest point where players are allowed to dig. These rules explain why simply walking around the surface is not always enough to find veins.

All Veins and Required Bombs

There are currently eight main vein types in Mine a Mountain. Each one requires a specific bomb or a better version of that bomb.

  • Gunpowder Stone — Classic+ Bomb — Around 0–85% height — 40 studs minimum depth
  • Skyglass — Wind+ Bomb — Around 0–70% height — 40 studs minimum depth
  • Cryostone — Ice+ Bomb — Around 15–65% height — 50 studs minimum depth
  • Cinderforge Plate — Fire+ Bomb — Around 15–55% height — 50 studs minimum depth
  • Stormsteel — Thunder+ Bomb — Around 30–70% height — 55 studs minimum depth
  • Venomite — Poison+ Bomb — Around 45–80% height — 55 studs minimum depth
  • Chronoshard — Time+ Bomb — Around 60–92% height — 60 studs minimum depth
  • Dreadstone — Agony Bomb — Around 75%+ height — 60 studs minimum depth

The bomb requirement is important because using the wrong bomb will not properly open the vein. Make sure you have the correct bomb before spending time searching for a specific ore.

Gunpowder Stone Vein

Gunpowder Stone has one of the widest height ranges among the available veins. It can appear from roughly 0% to 85% of the mountain’s total height.

The minimum depth is 40 studs, and you need a Classic+ Bomb to break it open.

Because it can appear across a large portion of the mountain, Gunpowder Stone can potentially be found at many different elevations.

Skyglass Vein

Skyglass can appear from roughly 0% to 70% of the mountain’s height. Like Gunpowder Stone, it requires at least 40 studs of depth below the surface.

To open a Skyglass vein, you need a Wind+ Bomb.

Searching inside cliffs and deeper sections of the mountain can help you locate Skyglass rather than only checking exposed surface areas.

Cryostone Vein

Cryostone has a more limited height range, appearing from roughly 15% to 65% of the mountain’s total height.

It requires at least 50 studs of depth and can be opened using an Ice+ Bomb.

Since it does not normally appear near the very bottom or very top of the mountain, focusing on the middle sections can be more useful when searching for Cryostone.

Cinderforge Plate Vein

Cinderforge Plate appears around 15% to 55% of the mountain’s height. Its minimum depth is 50 studs.

You need a Fire+ Bomb to break open this vein.

Its relatively narrow height range means that searching at the wrong elevation can make it much harder to find. Try exploring deeper sections around the lower-middle portion of the mountain.

Stormsteel Vein

Stormsteel can generate from approximately 30% to 70% of the mountain’s height.

The vein needs to be at least 55 studs below the surface, and you need a Thunder+ Bomb to open it.

Because of its deeper placement requirement, Stormsteel is more likely to become visible after you have already dug into the mountain or exposed sections of cliff and cave walls.

Venomite Vein

Venomite is found higher up the mountain, with an approximate height range of 45% to 80%.

It needs at least 55 studs of depth and requires a Poison+ Bomb.

When searching for Venomite, focus on the middle and upper sections of the mountain rather than spending most of your time in the lower areas.

Chronoshard Vein

Chronoshard is one of the higher-altitude veins. It can appear from roughly 60% to 92% of the mountain’s height.

It also needs to be buried at least 60 studs below the surface, making it one of the deeper veins to locate.

A Time+ Bomb is required to break open Chronoshard.

Because it generates high up and deep underground, finding Chronoshard may require more digging and exploration than many of the lower-altitude ores.

Dreadstone Vein

Dreadstone has the highest listed height requirement. It can appear at around 75% of the mountain’s height and above.

The vein must also be at least 60 studs deep, making it one of the most demanding veins to locate.

You need an Agony Bomb to break Dreadstone open.

If you are specifically hunting for Dreadstone, concentrate your search on the upper parts of the mountain while looking for deeply buried sections of rock.

Best Way to Find Veins

The best way to search for veins is to focus on areas where the mountain has exposed or partially exposed rock. Cliff faces and cave walls are particularly useful because veins are generated inside solid rock and need to be buried beneath the surface.

You should also pay attention to the height of the area you are exploring. For example, searching near the top of the mountain is more useful for Chronoshard and Dreadstone, while lower and middle sections are better suited to ores such as Cryostone and Cinderforge Plate.

Once you find the correct vein, make sure you have the required bomb before trying to break it.

What Happens When the Mountain Regenerates?

The mountain regenerates once every hour. When this happens, the terrain and vein generation are refreshed. This means the location of veins can change when a new mountain appears. If you have been searching for an ore without success, the next mountain rotation gives you another opportunity to find it. The new mountain can also have a different shape and height, which changes how easy it is to access certain areas.


Veins are valuable underground deposits in Mine a Mountain that contain exclusive crystal pools. They are different from surface crystals because they are hidden inside the mountain and can only be opened with the correct bomb.

The key to finding them is understanding their height band and minimum depth. Lower-altitude ores such as Gunpowder Stone and Skyglass can appear across larger areas, while Chronoshard and Dreadstone are found much higher and deeper inside the mountain. Since veins regenerate whenever the mountain changes each hour, every new mountain gives you another chance to search for the ore you need.
