Escaping House of The Locust is not simply about running away from the monster. You need to complete several objectives around the house before the main EXIT door can be opened. The current escape route requires the WireCutter, Key, and Keycard. You also need to solve the colored cube puzzle to obtain the WireCutter. Because House of The Locust is still in PRE-ALPHA, some item locations and mechanics can change in future updates. Use this guide as a general route, but always pay attention to the instructions shown in your current game.
House of The Locust Escape Guide, What You Need to Do?
The easiest way to remember the escape route is:
- Find the red, blue, and yellow cubes.
- Put each cube on its matching colored pad.
- Get the WireCutter.
- Search the cabinets for the Key.
- Take the Keycard from The Locust.
- Return to the large door with the green EXIT sign.
- Use the required items.
- Walk through the passage to escape.
The three colored cubes are mainly used for the puzzle. You don’t need to carry them to the final EXIT door.
Should You Play Solo or With Friends?
If you’re learning the map for the first time, playing solo can make things easier. You won’t have to worry about another player moving the cubes, changing the puzzle, or accidentally bringing The Locust toward you. During your first run, try to remember these three areas:
- The room with the colored pads.
- The green EXIT door.
- The areas where The Locust usually walks.
Once you understand the layout, playing with friends can actually speed things up. One player can search cabinets while another looks for cubes. Someone can also distract The Locust while another player works on an objective. You don’t need to memorize every room. Instead, remember important landmarks and how to travel between them.
Step 1: Find the Three Colored Cubes
Your first objective is the colored cube puzzle. You need to find three cubes:
- Red Cube
- Blue Cube
- Yellow Cube
Each cube needs to be placed on the pad with the same color. The cubes can be found in different parts of the house. You cannot simply pick them up and carry them around, so you’ll need to push them toward the puzzle room.
This can take some time because The Locust may be walking through the same area. If he gets close, stop pushing the cube and find somewhere safe to wait. After all three cubes are placed correctly, the puzzle will activate and give you access to the WireCutter.
A Faster WireCutter Trick
There is also a shortcut that can save you from moving all three cubes. You can take one cube and push it underneath the hanging WireCutter. Jump onto the cube and interact with the WireCutter while you’re in the air.
If the interaction works, you can collect the WireCutter without completing the entire three-cube puzzle. This trick may not always work if the game changes the mechanic in a future update, so use the normal puzzle if necessary.
Step 2: Get the WireCutter
After completing the cube puzzle, the WireCutter will become accessible. Pick it up and keep it in your inventory. The WireCutter is one of the items needed to open the final EXIT door. You don’t need to use it immediately unless you’re following the shortcut or have already reached the escape door.
Your main goal now is to find the Key.
Step 3: Find the Randomized Key
The Key is hidden inside one of the cabinets around the house. The important thing to know is that the Key location is randomized. There isn’t one cabinet that will always contain it. Instead of checking the same rooms repeatedly, search the house section by section. Once you’ve checked an area, move to another part of the house.
This makes the search much faster and prevents you from wasting time. While checking cabinets, listen for The Locust. His footsteps and other sounds can warn you that he’s getting close. If you hear him approaching, stop searching and move away before continuing. Once you find the Key, you can stop searching cabinets.
Step 4: Get the Keycard From The Locust
The Keycard is the most dangerous part of the escape because The Locust carries it. You need to get close enough to collect the card, but touching The Locust can kill you. Before approaching him, decide where you’re going to run afterward.
Approach The Locust From Behind
The safer method is to wait until The Locust is moving away from you. When his back is facing you, slowly move closer and interact with the Keycard. Once you collect it, immediately run toward your planned escape route. Don’t wait around after getting the card.
Use Corners and Openings
Depending on where The Locust is standing, you may also be able to grab the Keycard from around a corner or through a small opening. This can reduce the risk of getting caught, but it isn’t guaranteed. The Locust can move while you’re trying to line up the interaction.
If another player dies while carrying the Keycard, check the area where they were caught. The card may have been dropped there, allowing another player to pick it up without approaching The Locust again.
Step 5: Open the Green EXIT Door
Once you have everything you need, return to the large door underneath the green EXIT sign. You should have:
- WireCutter
- Key
- Keycard
Interact with the door and use the required items on the different mechanisms. The WireCutter is used on the wiring, the Key is used for the lock, and the Keycard is used on the nearby panel. After everything is activated, the door will open. Go through the bright passage on the other side to complete the escape.
How to Avoid The Locust
You don’t need to fight The Locust. There currently isn’t a reliable way to defeat him, so your best option is to avoid him and learn his movement. Pay attention to his sounds. If his footsteps or breathing become louder, assume that he is getting closer.
If he starts chasing you, create some distance before turning into another room. You can also use narrow areas and openings to break his line of sight. The Shift + C slide can also help you move through narrow passages when you’re trying to escape. The most important rule is to avoid panicking. Running randomly through the house can easily lead you directly back into The Locust.
What Happens If You Die?
The game can save some of your progress after your first death. For example, objective items such as cubes may remain where you left them. However, dying again can cause much more progress to be lost unless you use the available Revive option. Because of this, don’t take unnecessary risks after completing the cube puzzle. The Keycard section is usually where you should be the most careful.
What If The Locust Stops Moving?
Players may notice that The Locust sometimes returns to the room with the couch and stands still for a while. He can continue making sounds even when he’s not actively chasing you. If this happens, use the opportunity to finish your remaining objectives. Still, don’t assume that he will remain there forever. His behavior can change, especially because the game is still in development.
House of The Locust Escape Route
- For a quick reminder, the current route is: Colored Cubes → WireCutter → Key → Keycard → Green EXIT
- You can also try the shortcut: One Cube → WireCutter → Key → Keycard → Green EXIT
The second method is faster if the WireCutter trick works in your current version.
House of The Locust Is Still in Pre-Alpha
House of The Locust is still marked as PRE-ALPHA, so you should expect changes. The developers can change item locations, puzzle requirements, The Locust’s AI, and even the overall escape route in later versions.
If a cabinet, cube, WireCutter, or EXIT interaction doesn’t work exactly like this guide, check the current in-game instructions first. For now, the main thing to remember is simple: get the WireCutter, find the Key, take the Keycard, and use all three at the green EXIT door. Once you understand that order, escaping House of The Locust becomes much easier.
