Race The Veil Tier List, How to Change & What is The Best!

Choosing the right race in The Veil can make a big difference, especially when you already know what kind of build you want to use. Each race comes with different passive effects, bonuses, and in some cases active skills.

There are several races available, from the common Human to the extremely rare Whaleborn. Some races are made for specific builds, while others are useful in almost any situation. This guide ranks the races based on how useful their abilities are. The ranking is about race performance, not how difficult each race is to obtain.

How to Change Your Race

After creating your character slot, you can change your race by speaking with the Stylist NPC. Talk to the NPC and choose the option to change your race. This will open the race reroll screen, where you can use your available race rerolls.

Race rerolls can be obtained from sources such as daily rewards and codes, so it is worth checking your available rerolls before spending them. Keep in mind that getting a rare race can take multiple attempts, so think about the type of build you want before using all of your rerolls.

The Veil Race Tier List

Here is the current ranking:

  • S Tier: Whaleborn
  • A Tier: Underling, Gem Head, Obelites, Goblin
  • B Tier: Human, Rat, Mushling
  • C Tier: Skeleton, Havling

The rankings can change as the game receives updates, especially if a race gets new abilities or balance changes.

S Tier

Whaleborn

Whaleborn is currently the strongest race on the list and is also the only Legendary race mentioned in the roster. It has several powerful effects that make it useful for players looking for strong overall stats.

Its Dusk Weaver ability changes how Weave stacks work. Instead of needing five stacks, Whaleborn reaches its maximum at four stacks. Each stack also gives 7.5% universal damage and speed, allowing the race to reach a total 30% boost.

Without Whaleborn, five stacks would give a 25% boost. This means Whaleborn reaches a higher bonus while needing fewer stacks. The race also comes with a night-only ability called Night Colora. There is a 10% insanity effect attached to Whaleborn, but the downside is fairly small compared with what the race can provide.

Because of its strong stacking mechanic and extra ability, Whaleborn easily takes S Tier.

A Tier

Underling

Underling is one of the best choices for players who want a magic-focused build. The race gives 15% cast damage, which increases the damage dealt by magic-based equipment such as wands and staffs.

It also provides 10% regeneration and 25% fire resistance, giving the race some useful defensive and recovery bonuses.

Goblin has better cooldown utility, but Underling gives more cast damage and additional defensive effects. Because of that, Underling sits slightly above Goblin in this tier.

Gem Head

Gem Head is a strong choice for players who want to build around summons.

It provides 10% summon damage and 15% summon life. These bonuses directly improve summoned units, making the race much more useful for dedicated summoner builds.

Skeleton also has summon damage, but Gem Head offers better overall bonuses for this playstyle. If you are planning to rely heavily on summons, Gem Head is one of the races worth looking for.

For that reason, it gets A Tier.

Obelites

Obelites is designed more for players who want a defensive and heavy build. It provides 10% resistance, 10% stone resistance, and 15% knockback.

The main downside is a 10% speed reduction. This makes the race slower, but the trade-off can be worth it if your build is focused on taking hits and controlling enemies with knockback.

Obelites also received an active skill called Exert Energy. When used, the character becomes more like a stone, becoming slower while gaining additional resistance.

After the effect ends, there is a temporary regeneration and stamina regeneration penalty. However, the extra defense can still be useful in the right build.

Because of its tank potential, Obelites remains in A Tier, although it is closer to the lower end of the tier.

Goblin

Goblin is an uncommon race, which makes it fairly easy to obtain compared with the rarer options.

Its main bonuses include 20% luck, 10% cast damage, and 10% cast cooldown reduction.

The luck bonus is already useful, but the magic bonuses make Goblin especially good for mage builds. Cast damage improves magic damage, while cast cooldown reduction lets you use those abilities more often.

It does not have the same extra defensive benefits as Underling, but its combination of luck and magic bonuses makes it a very solid option.

Goblin belongs in A Tier.

B Tier

Human

Human is the only Common race and will likely be one of the first races many players use.

Its main benefit is simple: you gain 5 extra HP with each Prestige. This can add up over time. For example, after 10 Prestiges, a Human would have 50 more HP from this bonus.

The problem is that the ability is fairly small compared with the bonuses offered by higher-tier races.

Still, Human is easy to get and provides a useful bonus without requiring a specific build. That is enough to place it in B Tier.

Rat

Rat has a simple but useful defensive passive. Every hit you receive has a 5% chance to completely miss, meaning the attack deals no damage.

On average, this means roughly one out of every 20 incoming hits could be avoided.

The ability is not powerful enough to compete with the strongest races, but it is still useful because it works passively without taking up an accessory slot.

Rat is therefore placed in B Tier.

Mushling

Mushling originally had a fairly weak set of bonuses, but the race received a change that gives it a little more value.

Its existing effects include 10% regeneration and 10% healing, along with a 10% reduction to stamina regeneration.

Mushling also received a new Decompose skill. This does not completely change the race, but it gives Mushling something extra that it did not have before.

Because of the new skill and its healing-focused bonuses, Mushling moves up into B Tier.

C Tier

Skeleton

Skeleton gives 10% speed, 10% summon damage, and 10% negative resistance.

The speed bonus is useful, but the summon damage is quite specific. Players using a summoner build can get some value from it, although Gem Head is a stronger option for the same general playstyle.

The negative resistance also makes Skeleton less attractive for general use.

Because its strengths are limited to certain builds, Skeleton sits in C Tier.

Havling

Havling has different bonuses depending on the time of day. At night, it gets 10% resistance, while during the day it receives 10% negative resistance.

The race also has 10% extra damage, but comes with a 10% attack speed reduction.

The night resistance can be useful because many players spend time fighting mobs during nighttime. However, losing attack speed is a major downside, especially for builds that depend on attacking quickly.

Overall, Havling has some useful effects but too many drawbacks to compete with the higher-ranked races.

It belongs in C Tier.

Updated Obelites and Mushling Changes

Two races received changes that are worth mentioning when looking at the current rankings.

Mushling gained the Decompose skill, which gives the race another tool and makes it more useful than its original version. It is now placed in B Tier.

Obelites also received an active ability called Exert Energy. The skill increases resistance while making the character slower, followed by temporary regeneration penalties.

These changes do not completely change the tier list, but they do make both races more interesting for specific builds.

Which Race Should You Choose?

The best race depends on the build you want to use.

For the strongest overall option, Whaleborn is the clear S Tier choice. Its Weave bonuses and additional abilities give it a strong advantage.

For magic builds, Underling and Goblin are both good choices. Underling focuses more on damage and defensive bonuses, while Goblin adds luck and cast cooldown reduction.

For summoners, Gem Head is the better option because of its summon damage and summon life bonuses.

If you want a tanky build, Obelites can work well despite the speed penalty.

Meanwhile, Human and Rat are perfectly usable if you do not have access to higher-tier races yet.

The Veil has a good mix of races, with each one offering something different. Some are made for specific builds, while others are more useful as general-purpose choices.

For the current ranking, Whaleborn takes S Tier, while Underling, Gem Head, Obelites, and Goblin make up the main A Tier choices. Human, Rat, and the updated Mushling sit in B Tier, while Skeleton and Havling are placed in C Tier.

As new updates arrive, these rankings can change. A new passive or active skill can quickly make a weaker race much more useful, so it is worth checking the race bonuses again after major updates.
