The new Tracking skill lets you search for animal signs and follow them until you locate wildlife. With the right setup, you can find deer and other animals without spending hours randomly walking through the forest.
The process becomes much easier once you understand how the search system works. You need the correct search focus, a good hunting location, and enough stamina to move through the wilderness. Here is a simple way to track and hunt deer in Build 42.
Prepare Your Character Before Hunting
Before heading into the woods, make sure your character has the equipment needed for hunting. A rifle is important if your goal is to take down a deer, while a Tracking skill book can help you improve the skill faster.
Once you reach a suitable area, activate Search Mode. Open the search focus dropdown and select Animal Tracks. Do not select Animals, because that option is mainly used when looking for smaller creatures such as frogs, snails, and eggs.
Animal Tracks is the option you need for finding signs left by larger wildlife. Your search can reveal hoof prints, droppings, and patches of disturbed ground. These clues can eventually lead you directly to deer or rabbits.
Find a Good Hunting Location

You should also pay attention to your footwear. Walking through forests, bushes, fallen trees, and rough terrain can quickly damage your boots.
Bring an extra pair of sturdy boots in your backpack or vehicle. Losing your footwear while you are far from civilization can turn a successful hunting trip into a dangerous walk home.
Use a Zigzag Pattern to Find Tracks
One common mistake is simply turning on Animal Tracks and walking in a straight line for a very long distance. This wastes time and can make it harder to properly search the area.
Instead, choose a small hunting zone and systematically cover it. Stay crouched and move from side to side using a loose zigzag or S-shaped pattern.
Try to overlap each pass slightly. You can think of your search radius like a brush painting across the ground. Slowly covering an area this way gives the game more opportunities to reveal animal tracks.
Eventually, you should notice a yellow track on the ground.
Inspect Every Track You Find
Animal tracks can appear in several forms. You may see hoof prints, droppings, or disturbed ground. When you find one, walk over to it and right-click the track.
Choose the Inspect option to investigate it.
Inspecting tracks is important for several reasons. First, it gives you Tracking experience. Second, it tells you which animal left the track. Most importantly, the inspection provides an arrow showing the direction the animal traveled.
Once you have the direction, continue moving that way while staying in Search Mode.
Follow the Trail Carefully
Do not rush after finding your first track. Continue crouching and use another loose zigzag pattern while moving toward the direction shown by the previous clue.
Keep watching the ground for another yellow track. When you find one, inspect it and repeat the process.
Sometimes the trail may appear to disappear. This does not necessarily mean the animal is gone. Return to the last track you successfully inspected and search the surrounding area.
Try making a wider zigzag or a small circle around that location. Eventually, you may find another clue and continue following the trail.
As your Tracking skill improves, this process becomes more reliable and easier to manage.
Approach the Deer Without Making Too Much Noise
Once you get close enough, the animal can spawn into the world. This is the point where you need to become even more careful.
Stay crouched and avoid unnecessary movement. Your rifle should already be loaded before you reach the animal, so you do not have to waste time preparing your weapon when the deer appears.
Do not sprint unless you absolutely need to, especially if there are no zombies nearby. Running can create unnecessary noise and make the situation more difficult.
Before taking the shot, make sure the area around you is safe. You do not want a zombie wandering into the middle of your hunt.
Take the Shot
When the deer or fawn appears, try to get a good angle before firing. A sideways position can give you a better target and make lining up the shot easier.
Once you have a clear view, stop moving and aim carefully. Avoid rushing the shot just because the animal is nearby.
Take the shot when you are confident. If the animal goes down, check the surrounding area before approaching the body. Zombies can still be a threat while you are focused on hunting.
Transporting Your Kill
After successfully hunting an animal, you need to get the carcass back to your base.
Small animals such as rabbits can be picked up and placed inside your backpack or vehicle. Larger animals require more effort because deer and fawns take up considerably more space.
For a deer-sized animal, carry the corpse back to your vehicle or place it directly into the trunk if possible. Having a vehicle nearby can make hunting trips much easier, especially when you plan to bring the meat and other materials back home.
How to Butcher a Deer
Once you return to your base, prepare the equipment needed to process the carcass. A sharp knife, such as a hunting knife or kitchen knife, is useful for butchering.
For larger animals like deer, having a butcher’s hook is also helpful. You will need enough room in your refrigerator or freezer to store the meat afterward.
Place the carcass near the butcher’s hook and interact with it. You can hang the animal and then right-click the hanging carcass to access the Butcher or Carve option.
Processing the animal can provide several useful materials, including:
- Meat
- Bones
- Hide
Move the meat into your refrigerator or freezer so it can be stored for later meals.
Level Tracking, Animal Care, and Butchering

As these skills improve, hunting becomes more rewarding. You can find tracks more effectively and potentially get more useful materials from animals.
Cooking also fits naturally into this system. Once you have a supply of meat, you can combine it with other ingredients to create better meals and make your hunting trips more worthwhile.
