Fertilizers are an important part of farming in Graveyard Keeper 2, especially when you want better crop yields or want to improve your seeds. However, the game can make the system confusing because some fertilizer effects look similar at first.

There are three main fertilizer effects to understand: Garden Bed Quality, Craft Progress, and Craft Length. Each one changes farming in a different way, so the best choice depends on the crop you are growing and the result you want.

How to Unlock Fertilizers in Graveyard Keeper 2

Fertilizers can be found in the Farming section of the technology tree. The first fertilizer technology gives you access to Peat and the first Crop Boosting Fertilizer options.

As you continue unlocking farming technologies, stronger versions become available. These upgrades can provide higher Garden Bed Quality bonuses, more Craft Progress, or additional Craft Length.

The three main fertilizer effects are:

  • Garden Bed Quality
  • Craft Progress
  • Craft Length

Understanding the difference between these three is important before you start using valuable fertilizer on your crops.

What Is Garden Bed Quality?

Garden Bed Quality determines how likely your crop is to successfully receive a green progress tick. This value is separate from your Farming Mastery level, even though the game can make the two look confusing because they use similar terminology and icons.

Your Garden Bed Quality comes from your garden upgrades. You can improve it through the Garden Improvement technologies, with later upgrades increasing the quality of your farming beds.

For example, if a crop requires 5 Garden Bed Quality and your bed only has 4, you can still plant the crop. However, your chance of receiving a successful green tick is reduced.

How Garden Bed Quality Affects Crop Growth

The basic calculation is based on your Garden Bed Quality compared with the requirement of the crop. If your bed has 4 quality and the crop requires 5, you have an 80% chance of getting a successful green tick.

This means that being slightly below the required quality does not stop you from growing the crop. Instead, it makes each growth check less reliable.

Adding a +1 Garden Bed Quality fertilizer would raise the bed from 4 to 5. Once the requirement is met, each growth check can successfully produce a green progress bar.

What Happens When Garden Bed Quality Is Too High?

You can stack Garden Bed Quality fertilizers, but there is an important limitation. Going above the crop’s requirement does not automatically make every extra point useful.

For example, imagine a crop requires 5 Garden Bed Quality and you increase the bed to 8. You may see a full green bar plus part of another bar, but that partial bar does not work the same way as a complete one.

The important thresholds are the full green bars. If you have 5 quality for a crop that requires 5, you reach one full bar. Reaching 10 gives you another full bar, while having 8 or 9 does not provide the same benefit as reaching 10.

What Is Craft Progress?

Craft Progress works differently from Garden Bed Quality. Instead of improving the chance of getting a successful tick, it gives you additional green progress from the beginning of the crop’s growth.

For example, if your crop normally starts with four green bars and you use a fertilizer that provides Craft Progress, you could start with six green bars instead.

This means the crop is already closer to being finished before the first growth tick happens.

Craft Progress can therefore be very useful when increasing Garden Bed Quality would not give you another complete progress bar.

What Is Craft Length?

Craft Length determines how many additional progress stages or possible yields the crop can have. Unlike Craft Progress, it does not simply move your crop closer to completion at the start.

For example, a crop might normally have six possible progress stages. Adding a +1 Craft Length fertilizer can increase that to seven.

This makes Craft Length especially useful when you are working on improving crop or seed quality. Having a longer progression path gives you additional room for successful growth checks.

Garden Bed Quality vs Craft Progress

These two fertilizer types are easy to confuse, but they solve different problems. Garden Bed Quality is mainly about whether your crop can consistently receive successful green ticks, while Craft Progress gives you more progress immediately.

If your Garden Bed Quality is below the crop’s requirement, adding quality can be useful because it improves your chance of successful growth checks.

However, if you already have enough quality or cannot reach another useful quality threshold, Craft Progress may provide a better result.

Garden Bed Quality vs Craft Length

Craft Length becomes more useful when you care about the potential quality or upgrading of your crops and seeds. The extra progression stage can give you more opportunities to reach a better result.

For normal farming, however, you should first check the crop’s Garden Bed Quality requirement. There is little reason to stack quality far beyond a useful threshold if another fertilizer would give you a more meaningful benefit.

This is why there is no single fertilizer that is always the best choice for every crop.

Practical Carrot and Flax Example

A useful way to understand the system is to compare carrots and flax. Both crops can react differently to the same fertilizer setup because they have different Garden Bed Quality requirements.

In one test, every garden bed started with Peat, while the second fertilizer was changed between Garden Bed Quality and Craft Progress options.

The test used setups such as:

  • Flax with +1 Garden Bed Quality
  • Carrots with +1 Garden Bed Quality
  • Flax with +3 Garden Bed Quality
  • Carrots with +3 Garden Bed Quality
  • Flax with Craft Progress
  • Carrots with Craft Progress

The results show why simply using the strongest-looking fertilizer is not always the best strategy.

Best Fertilizer for Carrots

For the carrot test, increasing Garden Bed Quality to 8 produced the best result. The carrots required a lower quality value, meaning the additional quality was enough to create multiple useful progress stages.

The carrots using the stronger Garden Bed Quality setup reached the end faster than the weaker setup. This makes quality fertilizer a strong option when you can reach another full progress threshold.

Craft Progress still worked, but the higher Garden Bed Quality setup was more efficient for this particular crop.

Best Fertilizer for Flax

Flax produced a different result. The crop required 5 Garden Bed Quality, but increasing the bed to around 8 or 9 did not provide another complete green bar.

Because of that, the additional quality between 5 and 9 was not particularly useful. The better option was to use Craft Progress instead.

This is a good example of why you should check the crop requirement before choosing your fertilizer. More Garden Bed Quality is not automatically better if you cannot reach the next useful threshold.

How the Green Progress Bars Work

The green bars are one of the most important parts of understanding the fertilizer system. A complete green bar represents useful progress, while a partial bar does not appear to provide the same benefit during a growth tick.

For example, if a crop requires 5 quality:

  • 5 quality can provide one full green bar.
  • 10 quality can provide two full green bars.
  • 15 quality can provide three full green bars.
  • 8 or 9 quality does not provide the same benefit as reaching 10.

Because of this, you should think about fertilizer in terms of thresholds rather than simply stacking as many quality points as possible.

How Fertilizer Affects Farming Time

Different fertilizer combinations can also change how quickly a crop reaches harvest. A setup that provides additional starting progress can reduce the number of growth ticks needed.

In the practical example, the carrot beds using stronger Garden Bed Quality reached harvest in fewer ticks. The beds using Craft Progress also started ahead because they received additional green bars immediately.

The exact result depends on the crop, its requirements, and the fertilizer combination. This is why testing different combinations can help you find the most efficient setup for your farm.

Best Fertilizer for Upgrading Seeds

Craft Length is especially interesting when your goal is to upgrade seed quality rather than simply produce crops as quickly as possible. A longer progression path can give you additional chances to reach higher crop grades. For example, one setup may have an additional silver-star stage compared with another setup.

This matters because failed growth ticks can affect how far your crop progresses. With a longer Craft Length, you have more room to recover before reaching the final stage. For players focused on improving seeds, Craft Length can therefore be more valuable than simply maximizing Garden Bed Quality.

How to Choose the Right Fertilizer

Before placing fertilizer, check the crop you want to plant and compare its requirements with your current Garden Bed Quality. A simple approach is:

  1. Check the crop’s required Garden Bed Quality.
  2. Check your current Garden Bed Quality.
  3. See whether a fertilizer can reach the next full quality threshold.
  4. If it cannot, consider Craft Progress instead.
  5. Use Craft Length when you want more progression opportunities or are working on seed upgrades.
  6. Avoid stacking quality points that do not reach another useful threshold.

This method prevents you from wasting fertilizer on extra points that do not actually improve the crop’s growth in a meaningful way.

The biggest thing to remember is that Garden Bed Quality, Craft Progress, and Craft Length are not interchangeable. Garden Bed Quality affects your chance of successful growth ticks, Craft Progress gives you additional progress from the beginning, and Craft Length increases the available progression path.

For regular crops, aim for useful Garden Bed Quality thresholds instead of simply trying to get the highest number possible. If you cannot reach another full threshold, Craft Progress may be the better choice.

For seed upgrading, Craft Length can be particularly useful because the additional progression space gives you more opportunities to reach higher-quality results. Once you understand these differences, choosing fertilizer in Graveyard Keeper 2 becomes much more straightforward.
