Don’t be worry about the size of the map eating your phone storage, since it only needs small amount of space. The New York city map itself for example, only sized at 13 Mb. To save the data package on your phone, it is better to download the maps via Wi-Fi.

However, by using the Google maps offline, you can save only small areas. If the area is too big then you will received a message saying that the map cannot be saved. The solution is to slash the area into smaller areas. In addition, you also cannot search places within the offline map, as well as there is no offline navigation. And unfortunately the maps you have downloaded will not last forever, meaning that after 30 days since you have downloaded at the first time, the maps will be deleted automatically.
