Maze Mechanics

Character Balance and Alignment

Paradise on the Other Side introduces an alignment system inspired by classic role-playing games. Your Balance Clock is split between two hands:

  • Upper Hand: Options include Order, Free, or Chaos
  • Lower Hand: Options include Goodness, Balance, or Evil

These combine into nine possible alignments, each offering a unique bonus:

  • Orderly Good: Gain +1 power for every 8 spells cast.
  • Orderly Evil: Increase attack by +1 for every 5 enemies defeated.
  • Orderly Balance: Recover 1% HP every 5 rounds without taking damage.
  • Free Good: Enjoy a 30% increase in MP.
  • Free Evil: Benefit from a 30% boost to attack.
  • Free Balance: Receive 25% less damage overall.
  • Chaotic Good: After casting a spell, there’s a 12% chance to gain +1 MP.
  • Chaotic Evil: Defeating an enemy may grant +1 attack with a 20% chance.
  • Chaotic Balance: When damaged, you inflict extra damage equal to 10% of your max HP.

Changing Your Alignment

You can alter your alignment through decisions made during maze occurrences or by using specific items that directly affect your Balance Clock. Once you commit to a certain path (Order, Chaos, Goodness, or Evil), some choices in future encounters may become unavailable, so plan your strategy carefully.

Maze Occurrences

Throughout your run, you’ll encounter several special events that can influence your alignment and reward you with valuable items:

  • Mysterious Beacon: Appears on the 6th floor and allows you to switch between War-Torn Land, Demon Forbidden Zone, and Human Race Base.
  • Dark Lair: Navigate cave vines and face 4–6 enemies while collecting drops such as Shadow Stones, Stones of Holy Light, Devil Fangs, or rune stones.
  • Wandering Merchant: Offers items like Shadow Stones, various Runes, Ointments, and Purification Crystals for EP.
  • Magic Ward: Enhance your stats by inserting specific stones; inserting a Holy Stone (available only once per run) upgrades it to a Holy Rune Stone for bonus effects on the next floor.
  • Watchtower: Reveals the contents of each slate, giving you crucial information about upcoming encounters.
  • Intelligence Officer: Once freed from the Demon Prison, he roams Human Race Base floors, providing clues to locate powerful items like the Demon-Breaking Sword and Demon-Protecting Armor.
  • Demon Observer: Exchange crystals for records that boost your damage against specific enemy types.

Zone Specific Occurrences

Depending on your location—War-Torn Land, Demon Forbidden Zone, or Human Race Base—you’ll face unique events such as:

  • Injured Demon: Decide whether to heal it (earning rewards like Ointment or Magic Dust) or kill it for Meatloaf or Devil Fangs, each choice affecting your alignment.
  • Injured Soldier: Treating a soldier may grant you a Stone of Holy Light or additional EP, while other choices can yield different rewards.
  • Sickly Villager: Freeing, blackmailing, or healing this character will affect your alignment and provide varied loot.

Corpses and Loot

Exploring the maze thoroughly means you’ll come across several corpses, each offering potential rewards:

  • Regular Corpses: Typically drop Farplane’s Lantern Soul.
  • Corpse of the Great Demon: Your alignment choices determine whether you receive a Broken Demon Soldier’s Soul (Shadow Stone) or a Complete Demon Soldier’s Soul (granting +2 power).
  • Remains of Human or Demon Soldiers: These drops can give you additional Shadow Stones, Fire Bolts, or even boost your HP or MP if fully collected.
  • Notable Remains: Items such as the Bounty Hunter Bracelet, Sun Dust, Poison Horn, and Pure Pendant (which transforms into a Green Amber Pendant) each provide unique stat boosts or effects.

Potions and Title-Specific Loot

The maze also offers specialized potion formulas that can alter your attributes and reset certain alignment qualities:

  • Rule Reversal Reagent: A 2-star potion costing 4k Gold that boosts EP by 200 and swaps Order and Chaos qualities.
  • Good and Evil Reversal Reagent: Also 2 stars and 4k Gold, this potion adjusts the Good and Evil qualities for an EP boost.
  • Freedom Reagent: A 3-star formula for 10k Gold that clears negative statuses and resets qualities to Freedom.
  • Balance Reagent: Another 3-star option costing 10k Gold, it increases attack and magic power by 3 and resets qualities to Balance.

Additional title-specific loot can also be found throughout the maze, further enhancing your character’s abilities.

A special secret awaits those who venture deep into the maze. A spoiler alert for those who prefer discovering hidden rewards on their own: there is a method to secure the Apocalypse gumball. Although details remain under wraps for the intrepid explorer, know that unlocking this secret can add a significant advantage to your collection.
