As you progress through Digimon UP, you’ll quickly notice that your team is made up of more than just a single Partner Digimon. The game features several different Digimon categories, each serving a unique role in combat and account progression.

Understanding how these systems work will help you prioritize upgrades and avoid wasting resources early on. While your Partner Digimon remains the star of your team, Support Digimon, Buddy Digimon, and SP Supports all contribute to your overall power and should not be ignored.

1. Partner Digimon

Your Partner Digimon is the most important unit on your account. This is the Digimon you choose at the start of the game, raise through multiple Digivolution stages, and use throughout your adventure.

One interesting aspect of Digimon UP is that your starter choice does not appear to significantly affect gameplay performance. Instead of having unique strengths and weaknesses tied to each Digimon, much of your combat effectiveness comes from the build path you select. These paths determine your active and passive skills, allowing you to focus on areas such as Attack, Defense, or SP Recovery.

Because of this system, players can choose their favorite Digimon without feeling forced into a specific meta option. Whether you start with Agumon, Gabumon, Palmon, or another starter, your long-term strength depends more on your build choices and progression than the Digimon itself.

2. Support Digimon

Support Digimon act as secondary units that assist your Partner Digimon during battle. While they are not the primary focus of your team, they provide valuable stat boosts and contribute additional combat power.

Most Support Digimon are obtained through the summon system, and you’ll collect plenty of duplicates over time. These duplicates are important because they are used to level up and strengthen existing Support Digimon. As their levels increase, so does the amount of support they provide to your main Digimon.

Although they are not as impactful as your Partner or SP Support units, regularly upgrading your Support Digimon is still an important part of increasing your overall team strength.

3. Buddy Digimon

Buddy Digimon become available later in your progression and work differently from traditional support units. Instead of leveling individual Buddy Digimon, you level the Buddy slot itself.

This means any resources invested into the Buddy system benefit future Buddy Digimon you decide to use. As a result, upgrading Buddy slots is generally considered a safe investment because progress isn’t tied to a specific Digimon.

The only time duplicates become important is when you want to perform breakthroughs on individual Buddy Digimon. These breakthroughs improve their maximum potential and allow them to become stronger over time.

Because the slot-based leveling system is straightforward, Buddy Digimon are relatively easy to manage compared to some of the game’s other progression mechanics.

4. SP Support Digimon

SP Support Digimon are among the most valuable support units in Digimon UP. They provide significantly stronger bonuses than standard Support Digimon and can have a major impact on your team’s performance.

Like the Buddy system, SP Supports use a shared leveling structure where you upgrade the support slot itself rather than constantly investing in individual units. This makes progression more efficient and helps players improve their entire support lineup at once.

Duplicates are primarily used for breakthroughs, unlocking additional improvements and boosting the effectiveness of specific SP Support Digimon. Because of their overall impact, many players prioritize obtaining and upgrading powerful SP Supports whenever possible.

Which Digimon Type Is Most Important?

If you’re unsure where to focus your resources, prioritize them in this order:

  1. Partner Digimon
  2. SP Support Digimon
  3. Buddy Digimon
  4. Standard Support Digimon

Your Partner Digimon drives nearly all of your progression, making it the most important investment. SP Supports provide the largest secondary boost, while Buddy Digimon offer reliable long-term growth. Standard Support Digimon are still useful but generally have the smallest impact compared to the other systems.

Digimon UP’s team-building system is built around several layers of support that all work together to strengthen your main Digimon. While your Partner Digimon remains the centerpiece of your account, Support Digimon, Buddy Digimon, and SP Supports each contribute valuable bonuses that become increasingly important as you progress. By understanding how each type functions and where to invest your resources, you’ll be able to build a stronger team and advance through the game’s content much more efficiently.
