Grand Blue Fishing Guide: How to Fish, Skill Tree, Fish List, and Mutations

Fishing is one of the four Life Skills available in Grand Blue. It gives you a way to collect fish, discover rare catches, earn Gold, and level up a separate Fishing progression tree. Some fish are also tied to specific locations, so exploring different areas is important if you want to complete your collection.

To start fishing, you only need a Fishing Rod and access to water. You can fish in the ocean, ponds, and other water areas around the world. As you level up Fishing, you can unlock useful skill tree upgrades and eventually reach Level 100, where the Fishing Rebirth system becomes available.

How to Start Fishing in Grand Blue

Getting started with Fishing is fairly simple. First, obtain a Fishing Rod and equip it. After that, find a suitable water area and cast your line. You can fish in several locations, including the open sea and ponds found around towns.

However, not every location has the same fish pool. Some fish are exclusive to specific areas, meaning you need to travel to those locations if you want to catch them. Fishing also has a chance to produce mutated fish. These mutations can increase the value of your catches, making them especially useful if you are trying to earn more Gold.

How the Fishing Mini-Game Works

The Fishing mini-game in Grand Blue is split into three main stages: Casting, Luring, and Reeling. Each part has a different purpose, although the Reeling section is the most important when you are actually trying to catch the fish. Understanding all three stages can make fishing easier, especially when you start targeting rarer catches.

Casting

To cast your line, equip your Fishing Rod and hold left click. Your casting performance is judged by how close your bar gets to the top of the meter.

Depending on your timing, your cast can receive different grades:

  • Erm
  • Okay
  • Great
  • Amazing
  • Perfect

A better cast may have some influence on the Luck of your catch. The exact impact is not fully confirmed, but getting higher casting grades is still worth practicing.

Luring

After casting your line, circles will appear on the screen. You can click these circles to perform the Shake action.

This part of the mini-game is relatively forgiving because you cannot completely fail the fishing attempt by ignoring the circles. Even if you do not click them, you can still reach the Reeling stage.

Not clicking the circles may reduce your Luck, although this has not been fully confirmed. If there is an effect, the difference is expected to be fairly small.

Reeling

Reeling is the main part of the Fishing mini-game. Once a fish bites, you need to keep the catch inside the required zone while filling the progress needed to capture it.

You use M1 to move the bar toward the right. Releasing the button allows the bar to move back toward the left.

The difficulty depends on the rarity of the fish or item you are trying to catch. Rarer catches generally move more aggressively, making them harder to reel in.

The rarity can be identified through the number and color of the exclamation marks:

  • White: Common
  • Green: Uncommon
  • Blue: Rare
  • Purple: Epic
  • Yellow: Legendary
  • Red: Celestial

If you are struggling with difficult catches, improving your Fishing Skill Tree can make the Reeling stage much easier.

Grand Blue Fishing Skill Tree

As you gain Fishing EXP and level up your Life Skill, you will receive Skill Points. These points can be spent on different nodes in the Fishing Skill Tree.

The main Fishing node branches into six upgrade paths:

  • Lucky Cast
  • Quick Bait
  • Deft Hands
  • Steady Bar
  • Composure
  • Sure Grip

Each path focuses on a different part of the fishing process. Some improve Luck, while others make bites happen faster, increase your Reel Bar, or make difficult fish easier to control.

Lucky Cast Skill Tree

The Lucky Cast branch focuses mainly on improving your Luck and increasing the value of your fishing attempts.

The upgrades include:

  • Lucky Cast I: +10 Luck.
  • Lucky Cast II: +10 Luck.
  • Lucky Cast III: +10 Luck.
  • Beautiful Haul: Gives a chance to reel in a second copy of your catch. Rank 1 has a 5% chance, while Rank 2 increases it to 10%.
  • Lucky Cast IV: +10 Luck.
  • Lucky Cast V: +10 Luck.
  • Rising Tide: Each consecutive catch adds +0.1 Luck to your next roll, up to +20 Luck after a 200-catch streak. Losing the streak removes the bonus.

If you are mainly interested in improving your chances of getting better fish and special catches, Lucky Cast is a useful path to consider.

Quick Bait Skill Tree

Quick Bait is focused on reducing the amount of time you spend waiting for a fish to bite.

Its upgrades include:

  • Quick Bait I: +10% Bite Speed.
  • Quick Bait II: +10% Bite Speed.
  • Quick Bait III: +10% Bite Speed.
  • Snap Cast: Each rank gives a 15% chance for a fish to bite immediately after casting.
  • Quick Bait IV: +10% Bite Speed.
  • Quick Bait V: +10% Bite Speed.
  • Chum the Waters: Fish bite twice as fast, cutting the waiting time in half.

This branch is particularly useful if you want to make Fishing faster and reduce the downtime between catches.

Deft Hands Skill Tree

The Deft Hands branch improves the size and starting position of your fishing controls, making the Reeling stage easier to manage.

Its upgrades are:

  • Deft Hands I: +10% Hook Circle Size.
  • Deft Hands II: +10% Hook Circle Size.
  • Deft Hands III: +10% Hook Circle Size.
  • Perfect Hook: The Reel Bar starts at 50%, increasing to 70% at Rank 2 instead of the usual roughly 30%.
  • Deft Hands IV: +10% Hook Circle Size.
  • Deft Hands V: +10% Hook Circle Size.
  • Practiced Strikes: Each hooked circle counts twice toward drawing the bite.

This path can be helpful if you find the fishing mini-game difficult, especially when dealing with higher-rarity fish.

Steady Bar Skill Tree

Steady Bar focuses on making the Reeling meter easier to control. Its upgrades increase the size of your Reel Bar and can make fish movement less difficult.

The branch includes:

  • Steady Bar I: +10% Reel Bar Size.
  • Steady Bar II: +10% Reel Bar Size.
  • Steady Bar III: +10% Reel Bar Size.
  • Keen Eye: Each rank makes the catch mark move 20% slower.
  • Steady Bar IV: +10% Reel Bar Size.
  • Steady Bar V: +10% Reel Bar Size.
  • Unshakeable: The catch mark behaves as though the fish were one rarity tier more common.

Steady Bar is a good option for players who want more control during difficult Reeling attempts.

Composure Skill Tree

The Composure branch helps you survive mistakes during the Reeling stage by slowing down Reel Drain and giving you more room to recover.

Its upgrades include:

  • Composure I: +10% Slower Reel Drain.
  • Composure II: +10% Slower Reel Drain.
  • Composure III: +10% Slower Reel Drain.
  • Last Breath: Each rank gives you +1 opportunity to pull the Reel Meter back above 0 before failing.
  • Composure IV: +10% Slower Reel Drain.
  • Composure V: +10% Slower Reel Drain.
  • Unbroken Patience: Once every 5 minutes, an escaped fish does not break your Fishing streak.

This is a useful branch for players who regularly lose fish during the final part of the mini-game.

Sure Grip Skill Tree

Sure Grip is built around Reel Speed. The faster you can reel, the quicker you can finish a successful catch.

The available upgrades are:

  • Sure Grip I: +10% Reel Speed.
  • Sure Grip II: +10% Reel Speed.
  • Sure Grip III: +10% Reel Speed.
  • Momentum: The longer you stay on the line without slipping, the faster you reel, up to a 50% bonus. Slipping resets the effect.
  • Sure Grip IV: +10% Reel Speed.
  • Sure Grip V: +10% Reel Speed.
  • Final Heave: Once the catch is more than halfway reeled in, you gain 50% additional Reel Speed.

Best Fishing Tips for Beginners

Fishing becomes much easier once you combine the mini-game mechanics with the right Skill Tree upgrades. Beginners should focus on learning the Reeling system first before worrying too much about catching the rarest fish.

Some useful tips include:

  • Fish in different areas: Some catches are exclusive to specific locations.
  • Practice your casting: Aim for higher casting grades when possible.
  • Do not ignore the Luring circles: While this part cannot completely fail your attempt, clicking the circles may help your Luck.
  • Focus on Reeling: Keeping the fish inside the required zone is the most important part of catching difficult fish.
  • Upgrade your Fishing Skill Tree: Choose upgrades that match your preferred fishing style.
  • Watch the weather: Certain mutations may be more common during specific weather.
  • Keep an eye on mutations: Mutated fish can be much more valuable.
  • Level toward 100: Reaching Level 100 unlocks Fishing Rebirth and its additional upgrades.
  • Complete milestones: Fishing levels provide Gold and Celestial Coins along the way.
  • Explore new fishing spots: Different water areas can contain completely different fish.

Fishing is more than just a way to catch fish in Grand Blue. It is a complete Life Skill with its own levels, Skill Tree, Milestones, mutations, and Rebirth progression.

To get started, all you need is a Fishing Rod and access to water. From there, learn the three parts of the mini-game: Casting, Luring, and Reeling. As your Fishing level increases, spend Skill Points on upgrades that improve Luck, Bite Speed, Reel Bar control, or other parts of the fishing process.

There are also 10 known fish mutations, with some potentially being affected by weather. Once you reach Fishing Level 100, you can Rebirth the skill and spend your Rebirth Tokens on special upgrades that provide even more ways to improve your fishing.

If you want to become a true Master Angler, make sure to explore different fishing locations, level up your Skill Tree, complete your milestones, and keep an eye out for rare fish and valuable mutations.
