Zankou is finally playable in Neverness to Everness Version 1.3, giving players a new Scorch-focused DPS with several different ways to build and use her. She can work as a main DPS who spends a lot of time on the field, or as a Scorch sub-DPS who supports another damage dealer.
Her kit may look complicated at first because Zankou has two different forms, multiple Damage over Time effects, and two powerful Ultimate attacks. However, once you understand how her Reality and Illusion forms work, her basic rotation becomes much easier to follow.
This guide covers Zankou’s abilities, best builds, Arc choices, talent priority, awakenings, recommended teams, and general gameplay tips.
Zankou’s Two Forms Explained
The most important part of Zankou’s gameplay is understanding her two forms: Reality Form and Illusion Form. Each form has a different purpose, so switching between them correctly is important for getting the most damage from her kit.
In Reality Form, Zankou focuses more on direct sword attacks and receives the Hunt buff, which increases her damage. Her Skill and Enhanced Skill can then be used to enter Illusion Form.
Illusion Form changes her playstyle toward applying Damage over Time effects. This form lasts for around 8 seconds and gives Zankou a different set of basic attacks. Her attacks can build up her sword-based DoT, allowing her to prepare for her stronger attacks and Ultimates.
The basic idea is simple:
- Reality Form: Direct damage and preparation.
- Illusion Form: Apply DoTs and prepare her powerful Ultimate attacks.
- Return to her major attacks: Finish the rotation with her large Ultimate damage.
Zankou’s Reality Form
Reality Form is Zankou’s default stance. She has a standard five-hit basic attack combo along with a charged version of her basic attack.
Her Skill and Enhanced Skill both allow her to transition into Illusion Form. The Enhanced Skill is especially useful because it deals more damage, provides more Break damage, and applies five stacks of her sword-based DoT.
You can gain access to the Enhanced Skill through several actions while in Reality Form:
- Basic Attack 4.
- Charged Basic Attack.
- Dodge Counter, also known as Critical Riposte.
Reality Form also provides the Hunt buff, which increases Zankou’s damage by 25%. This affects her basic attacks, Skill, and Ultimate, making this form more focused on direct damage.
Zankou’s Illusion Form
Illusion Form is where Zankou starts focusing heavily on her DoT mechanics. You enter this form by using her Skill or Enhanced Skill while in Reality Form.
While Illusion Form is active, Zankou receives a new four-hit basic attack combo. Each attack can apply her Heart Wrench DoT to enemies.
Heart Wrench can stack up to 10 times, with every stack dealing damage over time. The effect also lasts for a long period, making it useful even after Zankou leaves the field.
Her Skill also changes while she is in Illusion Form. When the Skill is available, Zankou can use her Enhanced Illusion Skill to deal damage and prepare her stronger Ultimate.
This is one of the most important parts of her rotation because it allows her to set up the next stage of her combo.
Zankou’s Ultimate Combo
Zankou has two major Ultimate attacks that work together.
Her first Ultimate applies five stacks of the Vile Ash DoT, represented by the flower icon. This DoT works similarly to her sword-based DoT and adds another source of continuous damage.
After using this Ultimate, Zankou has a short window to activate her second Ultimate. Using the two Ultimates together is one of the main ways to maximize her burst damage.
A basic Ultimate sequence looks like this:
- Enter Illusion Form.
- Build up her DoT stacks.
- Use the Enhanced Illusion Skill.
- Activate the first Ultimate.
- Quickly follow it with the second Ultimate.
- Continue with her remaining attacks when necessary.
This combination is generally the centerpiece of her damage rotation.
Zankou’s Scorch Mechanic
Scorch is another major part of Zankou’s kit. Her passive allows her DoT effects to apply additional Scorch stacks when the enemy already has Scorch.
Zankou can build Scorch up to three stacks, allowing her to maintain consistent damage against enemies throughout a fight.
This is also why having a Chaos character on her team is important. Zankou needs a Chaos character to help trigger Scorch, which makes characters such as Daffodil and Lacrimosa particularly valuable partners.
Her Scorch and DoT mechanics also have a fixed 50% Crit Rate but use Zankou’s Crit Damage stat. Because of this, Crit Damage becomes particularly useful when building her.
Zankou’s Best Playstyles
Zankou has two main ways to play her, with a third option becoming more relevant with certain Awakenings.
Main DPS Zankou
The first option is using Zankou as the team’s main on-field DPS. In this setup, she spends more time fighting directly and performs additional combos in both Reality and Illusion Forms.
She becomes the main source of damage for the team, making this the better option if you want Zankou to be your primary damage dealer.
Scorch Sub-DPS Zankou
The second option is using Zankou mainly as an off-field Scorch DPS.
This reduces her field time and allows another character, such as Lacrimosa, to spend more time attacking. Zankou still contributes a large amount of damage through Scorch and her DoTs.
This setup is useful when you already have another strong on-field DPS and want Zankou to provide additional persistent damage.
Break-Focused Zankou
With the right Awakening setup, Zankou can also become much more focused on Break damage.
This version is more specialized and requires additional investment. It can produce extremely high Break damage, but it is generally better treated as an advanced build rather than the standard way to play her.
Zankou Talent Priority
Your talent priority depends slightly on how you plan to use her. For Main DPS Zankou, prioritize:
- Basic Attack.
- Ultimate.
- Skill.
- Support Skill.
For Scorch Sub-DPS Zankou, the same order can be used, although there is less reason to heavily invest in every talent immediately.
If you’re trying to save resources, focus on the abilities that directly contribute to the role you want Zankou to perform.
Best Cartridge Set for Zankou
For Zankou’s main DPS build, Crimson Twin Butterflies is a strong general-purpose choice. It performs well across different situations and works particularly well with her overall damage profile.
Lost Radiance can also be competitive, especially if you already have strong pieces from the set. However, it has a stronger focus on Ultimate-dependent damage.
For main stats, the recommended choices include:
- Crit Damage.
- Cycle Intensity.
Crit Damage is particularly valuable because Zankou’s DoTs and Scorch can benefit from her Crit Damage stat.
For sub-stats, prioritize:
- Crit Damage.
- Cycle Intensity.
- Crit Rate.
- Damage Percentage.
- Attack Percentage.
Flat Attack and Break Intensity can still be useful, but they generally have lower priority.
Best Arc Weapons for Zankou
Zankou’s signature Arc, Ravenous Blade, is her strongest option for a main DPS build.
The Arc provides a large amount of Crit Rate and Crit Damage, making it especially effective for her direct attacks, DoTs, and Scorch damage.
However, you don’t necessarily need her signature Arc to use Zankou effectively. Several other Crit Damage-focused options can perform well.
Good alternatives include:
- Ravenous Blade – Best overall option for main DPS Zankou.
- Fluff of Finesse – A strong alternative, especially at higher refinement.
- Contemplative Cat – Useful as a Crit Damage option.
- Watch Your Head – Another reasonable stat-focused alternative.
One important detail is that Ravenous Blade provides a large amount of Crit Rate. Because of this, using a Crit Rate main stat alongside the signature Arc can potentially push Zankou beyond 100% Crit Rate.
Avoid wasting Crit Rate once you are already at the effective cap.
Zankou Sub-DPS Scorch Build
The Scorch sub-DPS version changes her priorities slightly.
Crimson Twin Butterflies remains a strong option, while Lost Radiance can also work if you already have good pieces.
For main stats, prioritize:
- Cycle Intensity.
- Crit Damage.
For sub-stats, focus mainly on:
- Cycle Intensity.
- Crit Damage.
- Crit Rate.
- Incantation Damage.
- Attack Percentage.
Her signature Arc is also less important in this setup because a larger portion of the team’s damage comes from Scorch. As a result, alternative Crit Damage Arcs can remain competitive.
Zankou Awakening Guide
Zankou’s Awakenings can significantly change how she performs, especially at higher investment levels.
Awakening 1
Awakening 1 improves Zankou’s ability to spread her DoTs and maintain important buffs across her two forms. It also makes her gameplay more flexible by allowing her to maintain Hunt and Illusion-related effects more effectively.
This is one of her most useful early Awakenings.
Awakening 2
Awakening 2 gives Zankou a special buff after triggering Scorch or Hexed. The buff greatly increases the damage of her next Ultimate.
This provides a significant boost to her burst potential.
Awakening 3
Awakening 3 provides interruption resistance during Hunt and healing during Illusion.
It is useful for comfort and survivability, but it is generally less important for damage compared with some of her other Awakenings.
Awakening 4
Awakening 4 allows Zankou to use Blood Fest Reverie immediately when she has enough Ultimate Energy.
It also improves the interaction with her Awakening 2 buff and allows her to build her DoT stacks more quickly.
Awakening 5
Awakening 5 is particularly powerful for Break-focused builds.
Her Enhanced Sanguine Dash can instantly Break an enemy once per battle while also increasing the team’s Break damage.
This can create extremely large Break damage numbers when combined with a dedicated Break team.
Awakening 6
Awakening 6 increases the final hit of Oblivion based on the number of DoT stacks on the target.
This is particularly valuable when Zankou is being used as the main DPS because she can build more DoT stacks herself.
Recommended Awakening Priority
For a main DPS setup, a general priority is:
- Awakening 5.
- Awakening 2.
- Awakening 6.
- Awakening 1.
- Awakening 4.
- Awakening 3.
The exact value can depend on your team and preferred playstyle, but A1, A2, A5, and A6 provide some of the biggest improvements.
Best Zankou Teams
Team building for Zankou is fairly straightforward because she has two important requirements. First, she wants a Chaos character who can help activate Scorch. At the time covered by this guide, Daffodil and Lacrimosa are the key choices.
Second, Sekhmet is an extremely strong partner because of her ability to increase the damage enemies take from DoTs.
With Zankou applying two different DoTs while Scorch also counts toward the effect, Sekhmet can provide a major boost to her overall persistent damage.
A strong standard team can look like:
- Zankou – Main DPS.
- Daffodil or Lacrimosa – Chaos/Scorch enabler.
- Sekhmet – DoT support.
- Eiroi – Flexible support.
Other options for the final slot include:
- Yuyan.
- Mint.
- Haniel.
- Adler.
The fourth position is flexible, so you can adjust it depending on your available characters and the content you’re fighting.
Zankou Team Without Sekhmet
Sekhmet is one of the best partners for Zankou, but she isn’t mandatory.
If you don’t have Sekhmet, you can replace her with another general support character. Adler is one possible alternative, although the team’s overall damage may be lower.
The more important requirement is having a Chaos character available.
Without Daffodil or Lacrimosa, Zankou becomes much harder to recommend because her Scorch-focused playstyle depends heavily on having a Chaos character available to trigger the mechanic.
Zankou Scorch Sub-DPS Team
For the Scorch sub-DPS setup, Lacrimosa works particularly well because both characters can contribute damage while making use of the same Scorch-focused team structure.
A simple setup is:
- Lacrimosa – Main on-field DPS.
- Zankou – Scorch sub-DPS.
- Sekhmet – DoT support.
- Flexible Support – Haniel, Eiroi, or another suitable support.
The main challenge is field time. Both Zankou and Lacrimosa can benefit from being on the field, so you need to manage their rotations carefully rather than keeping both characters active for too long.
Break-Focused Zankou Team
A Break-focused Zankou team becomes much more interesting with her higher Awakenings, particularly A5.
One possible setup includes:
- Zankou – Main DPS and Break contributor.
- Daffodil – Chaos and Break support.
- Adler – Break-focused support.
- Sekhmet – Additional damage and support.
Adler can make use of the Great Thief Arc in this type of setup, gaining additional Break Intensity when the team meets the required Incantation character conditions.
Sekhmet is also useful because the team still has access to Scorch and regular Incantation damage if the enemy survives the initial Break.
This is more of a specialized build than a general recommendation, but it can produce extremely high damage numbers.
Zankou Basic Rotation
Zankou’s standard rotation doesn’t need to be overly complicated once you understand the purpose of each form. A basic rotation can follow this pattern:
- Start with your Chaos character to activate Scorch.
- Switch to Zankou.
- Use her Skill to enter Illusion Form.
- Use her Illusion Basic Attacks to build DoT stacks.
- Use the Enhanced Illusion Skill.
- Activate her first Ultimate.
- Follow with her second Ultimate.
- Spend additional field time attacking if you need to rebuild Energy.
- Repeat the rotation.
The main goal is to prepare her DoTs before using the large Ultimate attacks. You don’t need to constantly reapply Scorch if the enemy already has the required stacks.
Zankou Build Tips
There are a few things worth remembering when building Zankou.
- Crit Damage is particularly valuable because her DoTs and Scorch can use her Crit Damage stat.
- Cycle Intensity is another important stat because much of her damage comes from Scorch.
- Don’t overinvest in Crit Rate when using Ravenous Blade.
- A Chaos character is extremely important for her standard Scorch gameplay.
- Sekhmet provides a major boost to her DoT-based damage.
- Main DPS Zankou wants more field time and direct damage stats.
- Sub-DPS Zankou puts more value on Cycle Intensity and persistent Scorch damage.
- Break builds become much more interesting with higher Awakening levels.
- Her Enhanced Illusion Skill can provide useful protection during its animation, making it helpful against dangerous attacks.
Is Zankou Worth Building?
Zankou is a strong DPS option in Neverness to Everness 1.3, particularly for players who already have a suitable Chaos character and want to build around Scorch and DoT damage.
Her biggest strength is flexibility. She isn’t restricted to being a traditional on-field DPS. You can build her around direct attacks, Scorch, DoTs, or even Break damage with the right Awakening investment.
At Awakening 0, she can already perform well with the right team. Awakening 1 provides another noticeable improvement, while higher Awakenings open up more specialized options.
For most players, the most important thing is making sure she has access to a Chaos character such as Daffodil or Lacrimosa. Add Sekhmet if available, then use the final team slot for a support or secondary damage dealer that fits your account.
Overall, Zankou is a powerful and fairly flexible character in Version 1.3. Her kit looks complicated at first, but the core gameplay comes down to managing Reality and Illusion Forms, stacking her DoTs, maintaining Scorch, and finishing the rotation with her powerful Ultimate combo.
Zankou’s strongest teams depend on keeping Scorch active while managing field time, making a direct comparison between main-DPS and Scorch sub-DPS rotations especially useful for choosing her role.
